    This movie was written by an Englishman based on his tourist's postcard impression of Ireland and its people, and it wasn't even filmed there. It's condescending to its audience to the point of insult, and I'm not even Irish. Its would-be feel-good vibes are belied by genuinely creepy undertones: the closeness of the preist and the boy, the mean-spirited dispatch of This movie was written by an Englishman based on his tourist's postcard impression of Ireland and its people, and it wasn't even filmed there. Its would-be feel-good vibes are belied by genuinely creepy undertones: the closeness of the preist and the boy, the mean-spirited dispatch of the old lady, and the ultimate revelation of the boy's parentage. And can we be so certain that all that money won't corrupt the townspeople? This is the first of many mediocre films that ride on the coattails of Full Monty; a superior, if not superlative, film. Stick with The Quiet Man; it's also faux-Irish, but at least it was filmed there, and has Barry Fitzgerald in it. Expand
