Like a feature-length Saturday morning cartoon with dashes of violence so graphic you'd swear you'd just stepped into Ralph Bakshi's Wizards. Which isn't to say that Goliath is good so much as compellingly weird on occasion.

Director Joe Pearson (who also has a mysterious “created by” credit) and screenwriter David Abramowitz have ginned up a fan-fiction-y premise that suggests much more apocalyptic fun than it ultimately delivers.

Considering that the fate of humankind is at stake, War of the Worlds: Goliath is remarkably uninvolving.

Rote character writing, voicing and animation devalue the more impressive design elements of Joe Pearson’s long-aborning project.

The main takeaway from War of the Worlds Goliath is that such a yearning still burns in some folks. If its articulation here were more compelling, it might have struck me as stirring rather than merely odd.

The proceedings quickly degenerate into deafening video game-style fiery mayhem featuring endless explosions and depictions of human combatants melted into anguished looking skeletons.

War of the Worlds: Goliath is just a few cereal commercials shy of a pointlessly cartoon marathon — violent, messily drawn and lifelessly dragging.

I could knock the characters, simplistic world, or any number of elements of this film, but I won't. Why? Because this is a kids movie. The whole thing is designed to be delicious to your 8-year-old. It's silly, action packed, and strangely a little gory for a kids movie.

You're kids will love it, and if you let out your inner child you might just as well.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hard to say who this movie is aimed at. The backgrounds and mech design are inventive except the Martian fighters are cliche copies of former films. If it's supposed ti be for kids it's too graphic in the disintegration of bodies, sexual innuendos and alcohol consumption. If it's for teens and above there's no complex story or character at all which leaves nothing but extended battle scenes that quickly become repetitive and boring to watch. The character design is like a steroid pumped version of eighties style GI Joe except not as well done. The script and dialog are rehashed versions of action films. Expand

The characters are stock, the story kind of pulls you in at first then it falls apart just as it gets going. The only redeeming thing about this movie is the design of the the giant mechs they ride and some of the backgrounds look good, too good to appear in this movie. If the story was more focused this movie would've kept my attention better. This one is a watch if it's free type deal. Expand
