I don't understand why critics hate this type of film. It was fun, comidic, and at times suprisingly exciting. The meaning, thought light, is not a half bad one. The action was good. Thought it was not a roll on the floor comidy, like Dodge Ball, it was funny. Give this film a chance.

Despite it's shortcomings, this is truly a good movie. Not only is there a buddy film here, but a couple of good lessons, a couple of hotties in a tree, and a couple of gruesom redneck villians. Poop jokes and potfields aside, I enjoyed the film.

One of the worst movies I've seen of any genre. I like this "type" of movie, as opposed to many critics, but it was just plain cliche crap.

Only slightly better than the movie it was based on: Deliverance. It was a waste of the $5.25 I spent to see it. You'd think as a 15-year-old, I'd be in it's target audience, but I guess it's greatness was lost on me. Don't see it. There's are so many better movies out right now that actually deserve your time. The best bits in this movie were in the previews. You've seen it all. Expand

This buddy comedy/ slapstick extravaganza/ coming-to-maturity meditation/ Deliverance parody was more or less thrown away by Paramount near the end of summer 2004...and I think even they were surprised at how long its box office legs ended up being compared to expectations. Deservedly so, I think; despite the mostly silly resumes of its three leads (Seth Green in the Austin Powers movies, Matthew Lillard in the Scooby-Doos and Dax Shepard in Punk'd) I was nicely surprised to see them working together realistically as actors rather than as comedians hogging the spotlight; they really did seem as though they'd known each other a lifetime. Lots of early 1980s culture--movies, music and sports--is cannily and amusingly referenced, but interestingly one 80s film that isn't mentioned is The Big Chill, though it may certainly be implied: the fourth pal, Billy, is like Chill's Alex in that his death forces the rest of the gang, now thirtysomethings, to evaluate their lives and make some decisions as they embark on one last quest to find legendary thief D. B. Cooper's hidden swag. Lightly enjoyable until the guys encounter some vicious pot farmers (the equivalent of moonshiners in 1970s drive-in fare), a couple of spacey nature chicks and Burt Reynolds as Grizzly Adams Redux, and then often utterly hilarious after, Without A Paddle does what it does well, and is what it is: a modest pleasure. Having said that, I have to also admit that the trio spends far, far too much screen time in just their skivvies than I needed to see, and that Adam Sandler director Steven Brill (Mr. Deeds, Little Nicky) really didn't have any call to pay tribute to the most notorious scene in Big Daddy, an even worse Sandler flick he may have WISHED he'd done, by including the three in a group-whizz-as-male-bonding sequence. Boring, cliches, waste of money unless you have never seen any comedy ever before, or are stupid, i'm 14 and i thought it was targeted to me, i wasn't dissapointed, i knew it would suck, i was so bored i was running around and yelling and throwing things, then when it was the last five minutes, i just left and played arcade games.

I love this film (I love that Matrix comment) it is funny (not extremly but funny enough to make me laugh) I like everything one major complaint it trys to have story and comedy like in Van Helsing which was okay but wasn't great (this is better than Van Helsing's though so don't freak out) I recommand this indefinatly. The comedy could be better though.

I really didn't find much to laugh about in this movie. The previews made it out to be very funny, but I was disappointed witht he results. Seth Green is pretty much the highlight of the film, and I really didn't find Dax Shepard (tv's PUNK'D) that funny in his role. Mathew Lillard plays the straight guy, out of the bunch, and he's not really that humurous either. Burt Reynolds part is disappointing also. Overall, it really isn't a bad film, just a disappointing one. Expand

I don't know what I expected from the same guy who directed "Little Nicky" and "Mr. Deeds", the 2 worst Adam Sandler movies (which isn't really saying that much), but I expected a little better than this crap. Every single scene, line of dialogue, joke, and serious "moment" all are derivitiave and cliched and most of all boring. Brill relies too much on random songs to carry scenes and his direction is flat, uninspired and boring. The script relies on all the usual buddy comedy cliches (crazy, madcap setpieces involving feces thrown at the bad guys, dogs who like pot, women with hairy legs, etc.), a.k.a. obviously very intelligent comedy. The most insulting thing of all though is that the writers try to present the film as really about friendship and trust and the journey these still-stuck-in-adolescence adults take to find who they really are (you can tell which scenes these are because Brill has soft acoustic guitar strumming in the background and closeups of the guys with serious faces). The villains are straight out of some bad "Walker, Texas Ranger" episode and the way they meet their doom, involving a crime syndicate with the local sheriff, is utterly embarrasing. A huge dud. I give it a 3 because it seems the actors had a good time. Expand

Not just "Deliverance", "Without a Paddle" has traces of "The Goonies", "Box of Moonlight", "Stand by Me", perhaps, "Outside Providence", and an explicit "Return of the Jedi" quote. It's obvious that this film had a lot of writers. One team of scribes decided on realistic violence, and another team went for gross-out humor. Deciding on a consistent tone isn't one of the filmmakers' priorities, so when Burt Reynolds shows up, it's hard to tell if he intended his performance to be realistic or campy. "Without a Paddle" isn't stupid exactly, just a little misguided. But the three lead actors convinced me that they're old friends, and that's what saves this film from being crap. Bear crap. Oh yeah, the bear. That was stupid. Expand

It was unrealistic but interesting. It was pretty funny as well and the cast was solid as well. What hurt the film was there were quite a few parts that were incredibly stupid and it ruined the film a bit. Its still solid though, Worth at least checking out.

  1. While the likable Seth Green, Matthew Lillard and Dax Shepard are definitely up to the comic excursion, the picture charts an uncertain course between wild and mild, eventually running aground in a pile of male-bonding muck.

Buddy comedies rely heavily on their leads' chemistry, and in this regard, Without A Paddle fails.
