Smith gives the appearance of wanting to provoke, but along with his smuttiness, he wears his heart on his sleeve.
The film is clumsily unfunny at times--particularly when Smith makes tone-deaf efforts at gay-and black-themed comedy--and it's occasionally gross just for the sake of being gross.

Kevin Smith's taken a cue from Judd Apatow's success with The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up and created a surprisingly sweet, profanity-laden sex comedy. Oh yeah, Zack and Miri Make a Porno will definitely offend some viewers (as did Virgin and Knocked Up), but I've got to believe if the title alone offends you, you know better than to buy a ticket to watch the movie. Zack and Miri Make a Porno that spells out right there what you're in store for. If you can handle the title, you can probably handle the R-rated film.

I absolutely loved this movie. Laughed all the way through, and even came close to tears in a few scenes. Didn't think it was possible, but a movie about a porno may have been the sweetest, most touching movie I've seen in a long time, without being sappy. Kevin Smith is a genius.

It would be too much to say that what Smith has come up with here is inspired, but it is pretty funny and very energetic.
The movie's front-loaded with puerile, junior high humor (and, admittedly, several laugh out loud moments), which is fine, but all this still followed by an increasingly awkward and clichéd third act.
Like a lot of things about Zack and Miri, the porn title feels like it's trying too hard.
This movie could have been an effervescent neo-screwball romance, "Bringing Up Baby" with nut-sack jokes. So there's no blaming the subject matter for the fact that Zack and Miri feels so dispiritingly graceless.
Smith appears to have poured his creative energy into the cheerful come-on of the title and left nothing in reserve for the movie. He fails to wring any memorable comedy from shoestring porno filmmakers because his own filmmaking is just as amateurish and slovenly.
Behind the ridiculous premise, disgusting scenes, and over the top dialogue, the movie has a sincere quality to it that is one of the funniest comedies I've seen. Elizabeth Banks and Seth Rogen are very funny and shockingly have chemistry. The movie works as a comedy and a love story.

The biggest **** at a recent preview screening came during a scene in which Mewes shows off his **** though, at last! Still, how Jason Segal of him. Does Apatow always get there first?

It just out and out bad movie. There are few good moment not really anything write home about and certainly not enough to save it.
