"Zombieland" is a rare movie that actually criticizes the world with its laughs and scare. It's a movie you would despise first and love later.

Zombieland was an utter failure. Saying that it was bad or tired or bland or uninteresting doesn't go far enough in expressing how poor a film it is; it flat-out fails on every generic level which could arguably be ascribed to it. It's not quite a road movie, it's about half of a teen comedy, and it's miles fucking away from what could be considered a proper, or even satirical, zombie flick. It seemed like nothing so much as a desperate attempt to cash in on a niche trope that's experienced something of a renaissance in recent years; the filmmakers obviously had no love for nor understanding of the things that make the genre great. Everything that made Shaun of the Dead so smart and sharp is missing, and what you're left with is a nutless 90 minutes that sort of disinterestedly wanders toward a conclusion without a sense of its own narrative stakes. Which is pretty appropriate, actually, because Zombieland doesn't have stakes. To have stakes you have to follow your film's internal logic, play by the rules you've set out yourself. It never even comes close. There's a cameo smack in the middle of the film that's good for ~10 minutes of chuckles, but the rest is basically filler. In a bad zombie movie, you're at least due some good gruesome fun, but Zombieland doesn't even deliver in that department. And the gratuitous use of the Z-word (and the movie's title, which I think is repeated two or three dozen times) drove me fucking batty. Expand

Funny is a word that is utilized for stuff that are funny, and Zombieland can take part of the word and fuse it with action. Zombieland rivals Shaun of the Dead , so maybe both have similarities . But who cares, as long as you laugh you will be happy.

With Zombieland's incredible cast, and its cool, visual style, and Zombieland managing to be funny, scary, and a great action movie. Zombieland brought life back to the Zombie genre. I give this movie 96%.

Whoa, this one sucks ass! Zombies in this film: bad actors with gore makeup shouting and grinning like idiots. They didn't feel like real menace. Wimpy main character also annoys the shit out of me, and makes this movie again less believeable. No way in hell someone like him could survive more than a day... "Fat ones died first". What about nerds with poor physical shape who fuel up with coke and cereals? Jokes were stupid and not funny, they made me dead serious It all just feels too Hollywoodish... see Shaun of the dead, it got it right. Expand

Let's face it. The Net has been taken over by marketing a-holes. We can believe neither so-called serious critics, nor "the public". This movie, in truth, deserves a 5 or 6 but I wanted to lower the rating. It's not terrible, it's just so-so. But after all the hype I was hoping for something better. As a comedy zombie flick it just doesn't bring it home. So aimless, so lazy, so lame. Watch Shaun of the Dead if you want to see it done well. To its credit, the cast give 100%. The DP is pretty good, too. The director and writer should be shot at dawn., if not before And as for those damn marketing b*stards? Shooting them would be a waste of good bullets. Oh, and Bill Murray? He's fine. But this little cameo ain't gonna be appearing on any "greatest moments" show, believe me. How I wish I could earn his fee for wandering on-set in silly makeup and slurring three or four lines! Truly, 2009 has been the worst year for movies in my entire life. Expand

Who would have thought this would be so good?! It is hardly scary - there are a few scenes, but overall it is rather comical, actually. A very smart comedy, with excellent dialogue and some rather funny plot. The performances are pretty decent, and Bill Murray's cameo performance definitely stands out as one of the most memorable parts of the film. Very funny comedy, worth while!

Initially enjoyable undead farce, but loses pace mid way and descend into looney-tunes denouement. The appearance of Bill Murray is an entertaining novelty, but is hardly 'genius' parody.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Zombieland: A darn good zomcom From the opening moments, you know this film is gonna be one fun ride. Zombieland shows the ongoing zombie apocalypse, from the point of view of four characters. Nervous Columbus is the typical unlikely hero, but he and his list are entertaining to watch, especially when the many items pop up at various places throughout the movie. Woody Harrelson basically steals the film as gun-toting, Twinkie loving Tallahassee. His dialogue sparks. The revealation that he lost his son really makes you feel for the character. The sisters, Little Rock and Witchita, run cons on the two males many times through the movie, with them stealing the boys trucks three times. Their chemistry really sparks, and you believe that these two could be sisters, as they set off through the zombie wasteland to visit the theme park they enjoyed back in happier times. And the cameo! Bill Murray appears, scaring Tallahassee and Witchita as he pretends to be a zombie. His cameo was seriously genius, making you laugh throughout all of his scenes. Tallahassee going all geek boy during meeting him is funny as, with them smoking from a bong, to dressing up as ghostbusters. Shame Columbus accidently shoots him, thinking he was really a zombie. To be honest, if Zombies do infest the world, there should be a lot more. Especially running to Tallahassee when hes unloading bullets after finding the redneck truck. Also, some of Columbus' early dialogue had me cringing a bit. The finale: Fighting zombies at the amusement park, from Talahassee on the rollercoaster to locked in the booth whilst surrounded, this ranks up there with the best film zombie fights. Gotta love when the zombies chasing after Columbus get hit by the swinging ride (dunno its name). And the zombie clown. Win! All in all, this was a brilliant zombie film. If it wasn't for Shaun Of The Dead, this would be the best zombie comedy film. Oh well Expand

This movie succeeded at being what it was trying to be, which is something that no one else was trying to be. Its funny, with an adequit dose of gore toward the beginning, and a simple flowing storyline. Did I mention it was funny? Zombieland will be remembered for its hilarious cast of characters and a very impressive cameo toward the middle. I would suggest this to anyone who thinks themselves a fan of zombie movies or anyone who wants a laugh that will stick with them. Expand

I went in with very moderate expectations. Happily every expectation was exceeded. This movie is beautiful, funny, and dripping with style. This movie was not funny at all. Who cares if Bill Murray was in the film? i dont. Woody's character did not make me laugh one time. After the first five minutes of the movie it became nothing more than trash. Shaun of the Dead is the best comedy zombie flick ever made and this movie did not even scrape the surface of that one. Barely any zombies in the film, mostly about some punk from the movie Adventureland that is not funny at all, he is horrible. It is a love story in a way. i was not impressed at all. Expand

The writing and plot leaves some to be desired in spots, but for the most part this film is perfect in its purpose: comedy, usually at the expense of zombies. I was laughing for pretty much the whole film along with the entire theater. Acting is excellent from Harrelson and Eisenberg and adequate to good from everyone else.

If the best thing about "Zombieland" was the zombies, and the gross-out factor of the cannibalism practiced by the walking dead, this latest entry in the horror subgenre(popularized by George Romero), would be just another ripoff, another brainless brain-eating spectacle. Billed as a comedy, thankfully, the laughs that this rollicking film generates aren't always edgy laughs, an audience's audible stamp of approval emanated out from violent situations, a nihilistic nonchalance over the loss of human(and zombie) life. Although there is some of that, conveyed through the hero's list of rules for survival(during the title sequence), "Zombieland" settles down after it sheds the requisite amount of gore to meet the genre minimum, and achieves transcendency(read: a zombie film for non-zombie fans) from its wide-ranging efforts. That's because a lot of the laughs derive from recognizable human interaction. Anchored by, holy mad cow, an interesting lead, the aptly named Columbus(because this Internet explorer discovers America) nearly relegates the zombies to the sidelines. Columbus discovers people: Tallahassee(Woody Harrelson), Wichita(Emma Stone), and Little Rock(Abigail Breslin); he discovers love(Wichita). One more film with the suffix "-land" in it(the first wasGreg Mottolla's "Adventureland"), and Eisenberg will have completed a coming-of-age trilogy. In those opening moments of "Zombieland", Columbus shows us the ill effects that stem from his reclusive conduct, as he narrates dispassionately about the fallibility of man(too fat, too stingy, too careless) while being victimized by a predatory evil dead onslaught. Late in the film, Columbus comes of age when he learns the value of human life, and amends the "don't be a hero" rule by becoming one. This is the most humane zombie movie ever made. Expand

Not as good as Shaun of the Dead. However that was such a funny movie, that doesn't really matter. The only thing Zombieland is lacking is the zombies themselves. But that isn't a bad thing either. Woody Harrelson's character comes off as a Mr. Burns type, but he develops into a sensitive one. Jesse Eisenberg is funny as a Star Trek nerd, Emma Stone gives a good performance, and I don't quite remember her name but the other girl is great too. The ending is very generic, but the rest isn't. The funniest movie of the year so far, it's very much worth the 10 dollars to get in. Expand

Anyone who rated this film below a 5 needs to go look in the mirror and smack thier stupid ego-maniacal reflection. I love that one person said the zombies didn't feel like a real menace..... dude it's a comedy. It was pretty funny. It had a hilarious cameo. The saddest part about the bad reviews is that most are from zombie movie fans. Ladies and gentlemen, let us not rip on films that are helping bring zombies back. Zombieland is great for 3 reasons. 1 its funny, and if you dont think its funny, go to the doctor.... you are dying from taking life too seriously. 2 it has zombies, anything with zombies is great, and thier zombies were horribly fantastic. In conclusion, anyone who tried to take zombieland seriously should have read the title of the movie again, and stayed on the couch. The rules won me btw... those were great. and finally, anyone who read this and notices that I only gave 2 examples when I said 3 reasons should skip the doctor and go straight to the ER. Expand

This movie was downright hilarious from start to finish. If you are looking for a great horror movie this is not it. It really is a satirical comedy on the zombie genre. Woody's character suits his acting talents like it did in No Country for Old Men. In this film though he is much more about bravado and humor. If you saw Eisenberg in Adventureland or whatever that movie was called with him being employed at an amusement park then you will be extremely familiar with his performance from the start. The action scenes where zombies are slaughtered by the characters are few and far between. But the filmmakers are creative and polished in making them entertaining and satisfying. I thought the movie was a nonstop entertaining laughfest from start to finish. Collapse

Most people that negatively rate this film doesn't get it. Its not a zombie movie per se, its a satire about 4 strangers dealing with each other in a post-apocalyptic world which cause happens to be zombies. The comedy in it is how these 4 characters relate to each other so much despite consciously distancing themselves from each other i.e. using places as names. It seems disasters pose a strange effect on people with no blood-relations. The force of similar experience causes them to band together like a family. There's also plenty of comedy to be had from Columbus's rule in surviving Zombieland, the zombie themselves and the surprise cameo. This is certainly on par with Shaun of The Dead, if not better. Nothing short of fantastic. One of the most entertaining and hilarious films I've seen since Tropic Thunder.

Kept me and my friends entertained. One of my favorites of the year definately. Kind of short and got just a little boring during the middle but for the most part it was great. Best American horror/comedy of the year I'd say. The actors did a darn good job and the characters were likable. Grats to the movie makers and thanks for talking of a sequel!

I liked the zombies, the gore, the violence. Woody Harrelson makes a good zombie killer. The laughs were there, but there was nothing overly funny. The teen romance element was kind of out of place.

Unlikeable characters, pretty dumb, tries to be funny and hip but the writing is really pretty crap.

Goofier than most zombie movies, but still fill of action, thrills and suspense, this is just a lot of fun.

I find that quality of a comedy multiplies when it is mixed with another genre. For example, Hot Fuzz mixed comedy with action and it was great. Shaun of the Dead mixed comedy with horror and it was also really good. Zombieland does this, as well. It's a comedy that is mixed with a little bit of horror and a little bit of action. It worked really well with this movie. I will admit it's not as good as Shaun of the Dead, but it does come close. And coming from a western attempt, it should the amount of effort put into it. I would definitely recommend watching it. I want to see it again. Expand

this was the worst "zombie" movie i have ever seen. there was little to no plot, and there was no reason why any of those characters would be alive based on pure stupidity. "lets go to pacific play land and turn on all the lights and rides and NOT expect zombies to attack, especially while we're in a major city. but before we do that let's go to Bill Murray's house with lots of glass windows and hit golf balls and make lots of noise"???????? it just didnt make any sense! i hated this movie to the core. Not what I expected, Zombieland is essentially a road-trip movie fueled with teen-age angst and mid-life melancholy. It is full of laughs and even manages a few tender moments. Above all, it is a finely crafted escapist romp, a movie feast for the senses. Oh and yeah, there is some great zombie killin

I usually don't like these kind of movies, I mean shawn of the dead was okay but really not all that funny. That said this movie was great, a perfect balance of novel ways to kill zombies/humans and running jokes. The "love story" was not over done and serves to compliment the overall movie without attempting to steal the spotlight.

ZOMBIELAND IS SOOOOO AWESOME! Seriously after I saw Shaun of The Dead I didn't think there would ever be a zombie comedy that could top it but Zombieland blows the door down with a double-barreled shotgun full of awesome. Seriously every scene in the movie leaves you thinking "HOLY S**T" "THAT WAS AWESOME" or "THATS F****N HILARIOUS". [***SPOILER***] And I will not spill the beans about Bill Murrays part in the movie but I will say its one of the most awesome I cant believe my eyes moments in the whole movie. Honestly if you don't go see this movie you are missing a classic that will be talked about 20 years from now. Expand

I am not a huge Zombie movie fan. Usually they are too gory for my tastes. But a friend dragged me to this movie and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was quite funny. It also wasn't that gory like it could have been. There was only one scene where I looked away because I knew something gross was coming. It may be a rare buy for me when it comes out on Blu-Ray.

Amazingly well written and put together. Entertaining humor that doesn't get old. There are some awesome one liners. The cameo is fricken hilarious! I would definitely see it again. I will purchase the DVD for sure. It was well worth the $9 ticket. I left the theater happier than when I say Inglorious Basterds, which was an awesome movie too. I enjoyed it more than Shaun of Dead, and that is hard to top.. Expand

"Zombieland" starts well, with the narrative voice of Jesse Eisenberg providing a witty and original take on the vampire story: antisocial behavior being a help in warding off the undead, with wittily designed title cards popping up at every time the narrator's lessons appear on screen. And while Woody Harrelson's introduction doesn't nearly live up to the hype and expectation generated by the ubiquitous traile, it has its share of moments. Unfortunately, most of this initial interest and amusement faded with the introduction of the poorly drawn, unattractive and unimaginative female characters (2 young sisters) that pop into the film somewhere in the middle of the second reel. And while it's pretty obvious when the character is shown to be such an innocent loner that at some point he's going to have to "nut up or shut up", given the way this takes place, audiences might be forgiven for wondering if the filmmakers have themselves had much experience with this. Really enjoyable "zombe" film, good performances from all involved and the most hilarious cameo appearance in a film for years. It did take a while to get going but I look forward to seeing it again. Not at all scarey, there is a bit of gore though if you are squeemish.

Not quite Shawn of the Dead but still a good zombie comedy.

  1. Falling closer in tone to "Shaun of the Dead" than "28 Days Later" or the George Romero movies, Zombieland has its tongue planted firmly in its rancid cheek while still delivering the visceral goodies.

Benefiting from the very different but very appealing comedy styles of Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg even when the script's wit runs thin, this should be catnip to jaded genre fans.

Fitfully amusing romp directed with little ambition and even less distinction by first-timer Ruben Fleischer.
