He succinctly gets his point across by instilling that much needed old-school nostalgia lacking in music today with nine tracks. Instead of diving into the album with a bloated guest list, Bruno and his production team, Shampoo Press & Curl (with assistance from longtime collaborators The Stereotypes) ensure 80s babies stay forever young.

With only nine songs, there’s not an ounce of fat on Magic, and nearly every track sounds like Top 40 gold.
  3. Few albums designed to sound like a party actually play like one, but Bruno Mars has pulled it off with style.

24K Magic is the rest of the park: rebuilt shinier and glitzier and safer, every element engineered to please more than the real thing, and with a hell of a tour guide. It’s not history, not even historical fiction, but harmless fun.

Ultimately 24k Magic's luxe exterior writes cheques its soul can't cash. [Feb 2017, p.115]

James Brown is referenced unto pastiche on the crisp Perm, but Finesse and That’s What I Like respectively revisit new jack swing and the young R Kelly with such love that it’s not so much throwback as righteous resurrection.
  7. 40
There’s scant distinction overall, with Bruno’s eager-beaver personality wearing perilously thin on “That’s What I Like”, a tiresome tick-list of unimaginative hedonism, and “Chunky”, a big-lass anthem lacking even the roguish, cheeky [sic] charm of Sir Mixalot’s “Baby Got Back”.

I am very surprised! This is a very good album, and in my opinion, one of the best R&B albums of the decade. Perfectly resembling the Soul,I am very surprised! This is a very good album, and in my opinion, one of the best R&B albums of the decade. Perfectly resembling the Soul, the R&B, and even the New Jack Swing of the 80s and 90s with a great and delightful production by Shampoo Press & Curl. Bruno has done a twist on his career and the result is wondeful. Inspirations are noticeable: Babyface, Michael Jackson, James Brown, R. Kelly, and many more. If he continues this way, Bruno will become a classic. Expand

I really like the opener, and there are some more interesting songs on here, but overall, this feels unfinished. When you're limiting yourselfI really like the opener, and there are some more interesting songs on here, but overall, this feels unfinished. When you're limiting yourself to nine short pop songs, you have to make them count, and I feel like that is not what happened here. Eh. Expand

Musically, 24K Magic is dynamite. Every song sounds great, with an impossibly fun sense of style that only BM is capable of pulling off. EveryMusically, 24K Magic is dynamite. Every song sounds great, with an impossibly fun sense of style that only BM is capable of pulling off. Every song is a finely-crafted, funky, dance-able, combination of passionate vocals and killer throwback-style music.

The lyrics, however, are utterly terrible, and even offensive to women. A woman is more than just an object to be used for men's pleasure, and Bruno Mars doesn't seem to know that. The lyrics are as shallow as they could possible be.

Bruno Mars will go down in history as one of the defining voices of the 2010's, and like many greats, fame and money plague his view of his fellow humans. 24K Magic is a cleverly disguised, fun, flashy album with terrible lyrics.
