Even though A Constant Sea is arguably somewhat conservative in its regurgitation of established tropes and forms, the execution of its inherited framework predominantly unfurls with confidence and clout.

A Constant Sea is not without its flaws--a few of the heavier tracks sound a bit too similar and the track sequence is slightly confounding--but it shows more promise than many debuts coming out of Brooklyn these days.

Numsuwankijkul fronts the Brooklyn-based psychedelic rock quartet, and on A Constant Sea, Heliotropes’ debut album, she shows that she can slink around a melody like PJ Harvey, yowl like Courtney Love in her best of times and pose as a softer-sided folk singer.

Heliotropes show a surprisingly mature and focused control of their formula on A Constant Sea, luring you in only to eat you alive.

    A strongly inventive debut.

After the third track “Christine” floats past like a lost Julee Cruise track on soulful blues guitar and vintage 50s’ keys, the LP takes a surprising but effective turn into heavy, murky territory.
