Universal acclaim - based on 9 Critics What's this?

  • Summary: The singer-songwriter's latest album was recorded with the help of Gillian Welch, Old Crow Medicine Show, Benmont Tench, and Nate Walcott.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 7 out of 9
  2. Negative: 0 out of 9
  1. It's an effortless success, from the opener, Ruby, big on melody and plaintive harmonies, to the dream-like Bells of Harlem, moving river-slow to a brushed snare and ending this quite terrific record with a meandering coda of wistful strings.
  2. The restless vibe to this ramshackle collection suggests Rawlings' greatest trait is his wanderlust. It's allowed him to work closely with a range of different artists in the past, and it makes A Friend of a Friend a spirited affair.
  3. Rawlings's solo debut sounds suspiciously like a Welch album with the vocal mix reversed; as his regular partner appears as co-writer on five of the nine tracks.
