  • Summary: The London-based trio of Joel Cadbury, Jamie McDonald and Brett Shaw return with a third album that finds them relying less on electronica elements than previous efforts.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 9 out of 14
  2. Negative: 1 out of 14
  1. While sometimes dreamy and ethereal, South are able to bridge quieter moments with danceable, gloomy pop – simply speaking, a great achievement.
  2. South have an ear for melody, uniformly excellent production values, and a good sense of dynamics; all of which manifests itself in some very satisfying melodic Brit-pop.
  3. Even with a couple of clunkers, “Adventures in the Underground Journey to The Stars is without question South’s best effort to date simply because it has done more to command the listener’s attention.
  4. While the tunes on Adventures may be a bit more nebulous and a bit less intricate than those found on From Here on In and With the Tides, they are by no means any less engaging, and in some cases are even more resplendent.
  5. What they’ve offered up is something that sounds like the Brit-jangle of the Stone Roses but less optimistic, a bit ballsier, and ultimately not as compelling.
  6. Adventures is a bright, beautifully wrapped package filled with nothing but styrofoam packing peanuts.
  7. They're not completely terrible. Their music won't damage your ears or insult you, it's just quite spectacularly dull.

they promised a fresh sound and they have delivered. South have ditched much of the electronic support of previous efforts and are showing they promised a fresh sound and they have delivered. South have ditched much of the electronic support of previous efforts and are showing just how skilled they are with their instruments, constructing a fine collage of up-tempo, hook laden rock-outs and more sedate, earnest songs. the wonderful thing about their detraction from electronic aid is that it has not killed the fullness of their sound. their ear for a good hook and melody is still very healthy. in all, a fine addition return by a band who have shown a willlingness to explore and be bold Expand

This is an excellent album! I'd even say that this is as good as the album "With the tides". The best tracks are You are one (my This is an excellent album! I'd even say that this is as good as the album "With the tides". The best tracks are You are one (my favorite and can't miss next single!), A place in displacement, Shallow, Pieces of a dream and Up close and personal. I think it's a shame that this band is not widely known. I just can't stop listening to Adventures. It's way better than the last Coldplay record. Expand

Perhaps the most underrated band from Englad puts forth another dreamy effort.

This cd is solid though, and the songs speak for themselves. While not quite as strong as doves, this band still hold their own. Expand

For anyone who caompares them with Doves, With The Tides is indeed a bit doves-like, but with much better songs on it. Really, this band is For anyone who caompares them with Doves, With The Tides is indeed a bit doves-like, but with much better songs on it. Really, this band is very underrated in whole europe, they deserve tons of airplay with such classic tunes. This is their second very good cd, not as good as With The Tides tough Collapse

Disappointing, however, contains some of Souths best tracks, which would be "Shallow", "You Are One", "A Place In Displacement", and "Flesh Disappointing, however, contains some of Souths best tracks, which would be "Shallow", "You Are One", "A Place In Displacement", and "Flesh And Bone". The rest of the album is truely unremarkable filler, sadly. Pray that they revisit the bliss of From Here On In. Expand

Maybe I'm missing something, but I really don't get the scores for this one. I hear a LOT of tuneless, pointless meanderings. Loved Maybe I'm missing something, but I really don't get the scores for this one. I hear a LOT of tuneless, pointless meanderings. Loved From Here On In, and liked parts of With the Tides, but this one feels like it fell off the rails entirely. I don't hear anything on this one that would make me want to revisit it. Expand
