  • Summary: Over two years in the making, 'After Everything' is the twelfth album from the Australian band, still best known for their 1988 hit "Under The Milky Way."
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 6 out of 10
  2. Negative: 0 out of 10
  1. Sounds utterly contemporary even as it harks to the band's glory days.
  2. A record that handily bests anything that they've put out in the last 15 years, and can stand head and shoulders against their best efforts of the '80s.
  3. Their strongest effort since their strong run in the mid/late-'80s.

It is the sound, and grace, that the Church have pursued for more than two decades, and maybe you've heard it before. But you've rarely heard it better. [28 Feb 2002, p.61]
  5. More often than not displays a penchant for melody and tension which would shame many of the new millennium's pop pups.

Fans are well served, but newcomers might tire waiting for the group's charms to percolate. [Feb 2002, p.93]
  7. Their now drab and dense psychedelia has been "updated" with the occasional drum machine but is still populated by willowy, damaged girls called Esmeralda and songs with "chrome" in the title.

Goes beyond Starfish and UTMW, while retaining some of the characteristic Church sound that showed back then, the title track and Radiance stand out, Chromium, Numbers and Seen It Coming are not far behind in quality. The recently released "Parallel Universe" is a good companion to After Everything, with remixes of those songs and a second CD of outtakes from those sessions. Expand

Calmed, timeless, relaxing... A timeless album, maybe the best ever done by this great band.
