While Long only uses a steady beat and some deeply resonant chords to convey this revelation, he nevertheless moves like a poet to unearth that heartening sense of truth here.

Moments like "Apparent Lushness" are where An Act OF Love becomes a headphones record par excellence. [Mar 2017, p.26]

An Act of Love isn’t the first album to conjure up images of after-hours, but it’s one of the most effective, and without uttering a single word. Jacob Long’s ability to paint such a vivid picture with his music is admirable and impressive, setting the sort of standard other electronic artists would do well to aspire to.

Although the 40-minute LP may come off as the work of an artist still trying to find his sound, Long seems to somehow pull off an enviable genre-bend on An Act of Love.

When the tracks are beatless, they sound like the musical equivalent of distant waves rushing deep in the night. What Long does isn't exactly complicated, at least on the surface, but it's still highly immersive and quite gorgeous.

Long's drum programming in general lacks finesse. It has neither the rhythmic spark to make bodies move, nor the sculpted precision for a mind-expanding armchair experience. Sometimes this isn't a problem.
