And Their Refinement Of The Decline Image
  • Summary: The Austin-based duo releases its first new album in six years.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 11 out of 13
  2. Negative: 1 out of 13
  1. I can confidently say that this is some of the most astonishingly beautiful music being made today.
  2. This two-hour double-CD/triple-LP, their first product since 2001, is grand, somber, amelodic, arhythmic and slow, leaving plenty of time to admire the notes' altered states.
  3. ...Their Reinforcement of the Decline is a boring, tedious, cold, sterile album that has next to no redeeming qualities.

This is one of my favourite albums of all time. "Even If You're Never Awake" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. People giving this album negative reviews because it is a "bunch of random tones slowly fading in and out" should educate themselves on drone and ambient music; it's like giving a negative score to Metallica because "there is too much of electric guitars and shouting" or to 2Pac, because "his music is just talking over a beat". I will be the first to admit that, in this genre, this album is flawless. Perfectly orchestrated drones and washing soundscapes. However, this is hardly a listenable album. At over 2 hours long, the album begins to literally drone, and become tedious. Some songs go on for 3 or more minutes too long, such as the 8-minute pieces and up. I did enjoy "Apreludes in c sharp major" and "A Meaningful Moment...," because they are simply beautiful. They are the only two I can sit and voluntarily listen to. All the others serve measly as background music. And actually, they're perfect for background music. You don't need to listen to them. However, this does not make for utter perfection like all too many critics are saying. I give it a 10 for minimalistic perfection, and ambience, and I give it a 3 for musical/listenable quality. Not bad, but definitely not half as good as everyone is saying. Expand

The album reminds me of what Brian Eno does better, esp. Music For Airports.
