Make no mistake about it, most of the instrumentation on the album is just Toro y Moi. More so ‘Moi’.

For now Bundick has accomplished many great feats and with Anything in Return, the first great album of 2013.

It may not be the most immediately exciting album of his career, but it is the most impressive and affecting.

What's most striking is how effortlessly Bundick seems to construct each groove without compromising the complexity of his hybrid style.

A little unbalanced, Anything in Return nevertheless showcases again just how good its maker is at his craft.

There aren't specific songs on Anything in Return that function as stand-out moments, as much as the whole album functions as one long moment that stands out for its post-modern, semi-nostalgic originality.

[Bundick] constructs a wold of dancey digital pop out of low-slung Cali R&B rhythms, blunted hip-hop, Gallic dance pop and quirky house. [Feb 2013, p.91]

[Toro y Moi] now returns to the disco house party with his sharpest album to date.

Toro y Moi goes longer and harder than before, and the results represent an accentuation of the elements which appealed in his prior work.

Soulful, grown-up, dancey synth pop is hard to do well, but Toro Y Moi nails it.

For now, the musically and emotionally rewarding Anything in Return evokes the feeling of being young with options and in no hurry to figure it all out.

For all of its well-intentioned flaws and near-immaculate production, this record hums with a life of its own, confident in the abilities of its creator.

The brew of Anything In Return is strong enough that its overly sugary moments don’t ruin the experience of the album, and it’s certainly strong enough to merit many, many plays.

Anything in Return is his most melodic album.

By trimming away the self-indulgent fat this uneven and overlong work might have been a landmark for Toro Y Moi. Instead it’s just another step in the path of of an interesting career.

In places Toro Y Moi succeeds effortlessly in adapting the mainstream for his own alternative means, but frustratingly, at times is only as meaningful as few comedy jabs of the ’90s dance demo button.

The amount of painstaking effort that’s evident on Anything In Return suggests that he’s in this for the duration.

His latest is almost a straight R&B/dance set. But romantic certainty is in short supply.

Anything in Return functions as an all-in-one summary of Bundick's talents, giving the impression of a maturing songwriter who has found his wheelhouse.

Anything In Return us ultimately a chill listen, but not a necessarily memorable one. [No. 95, p.59]

Anything In Return feels again like the work of an artist still exploring his sound and yet to pin it down to something concrete.
  23. 60
Bundick never quite detaches from the sound here, and if he languishes there any longer he’s liable to go down with the ship.

It sounds promising at first, but then it slumps into a bed of mediocrity that Toro y Moi has already proved he is more than capable of avoiding.

While Anything in Return might be the most consistent of any of his records up to this point, it lacks the punch to break through.

His latest album is full of sexy slow jams, hip-hop samples and an overall tone better suited to a club than a lazy house party.
  27. 60
Ultimately Anything In Return suggests a tendency to follow the musical trends du jour rather than defining a true Toro Y Moi sound.
  28. Jan 22, 2013

As Toro Y Moi is mirroring sounds from genres past, Anything in Return sounds all too familiar.

Return is neither a step up or down from 2010's wave-warping Causers of This or 2011's time-warping Underneath the Pine, yet it's not more of the same.

It has a youthful glow, but over 13 tracks Anything lacks substance.

The album wears a multitude of influences on its sleeve, containing elements of hip-hop, house, disco and funk, but ultimately there is a distinct lack of variation amongst the thirteen tracks.

It's not just a preference for textures over melodies that makes Anything In Return fall short of its genre-bending aspirations, however. Pop music is more than just dance beats and glammy electronics; it's an attitude, and Bundick might just not have it.

Bundick doesn't have a great voice. A one-man vehicle such as Toro y Moi won't fix that issue any time soon, so it might be time for some extra help.

It can at times be truly excellent 21st-century pop, but too often the songwriting just doesn't match up and many tracks are just multitracked signifiers with no connecting tissue. [Feb 2013, p.81]

Bundick can't seem to escape the downward pull toward conformity, fizzy production taking a back seat to bland pronouncements about love and yes, another damn hype man. [Jan-Feb 2013, p.90]

For all its chiseled flirtation, what Anything In Return fails to offer is any real emotion. [Feb 2013, p.112]

With the beautiful entrance piece "Harm in Change" to the groovy stepping stone "Say That", Bundick sets the stage for his brilliant display of chilled-out pop sounds - and don't worry guys- he does not forget about his prolific use of samples. All of his tracks stand out if you listen to them without the bias of his previous albums. Sure, it may not be the heavily processed, hip hop funk sounds of his previous projects, but he flexes his production muscle and shows us that he'll bring us clean, crispy, catchy pop without expecting anything in return. This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. A fantastic album that once again breaks the boundaries of genre and expectation. A quirky and intelligent album with apparent influences from electronic house, hip hop, indie rock, funk, and Chaz's own personal style. Songs like Touch, Harm in Charge, Cola, and Studies really accentuate Chaz's growth as a musician, producer, and song writer. Full Review »
