  • Summary: The debut album by actress Scarlett Johansson was produced by TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 11 out of 35
  2. Negative: 2 out of 35
  1. This is a brilliant album that will no doubt top some ‘best of 2008’ lists, but it’s hard to work out if it’s a one-off or not.
  2. It's a bravely eccentric selection and a captivating homage to a singular writer.
  3. The whole set is heavily dosed with reverb and electro-swirls, perhaps to cloak Johansson's vocal limitations as much as to add psychedelia.
  4. Sitek’s technique is, successfully, fascinating and unexpected. But so many purposes and conceits, both avoided and embraced, collide over the course of the album’s eleven tracks that technique simply overwhelms melody and Johansson’s voice both, but mostly whatever it is about the song that Waits nailed to the wall in the first place.
  5. 50
Beyond the fact that her voice is deep enough for her to front Crash Test Dummies, there's nothing particularly compelling about Scarlett Johansson's singing.
  6. Johansson simply lacks the intensity to stay afloat in Waits's whirlpools of ear-drummed madness.
  7. Sitek attempts to do Johansson (and us) a favour by burying her monotonous voice deep in the mix, but unfortunately, the musical support isn’t interesting enough to carry the album. Skip it.

I was expecting to ironically listen to this. But it's much better than expected, in a buzzy, 90s way. Seems to me most people I was expecting to ironically listen to this. But it's much better than expected, in a buzzy, 90s way. Seems to me most people don't like it because of their expectations/bias against actors. Not life changing, but certainly a record that can be enjoyed more and more every listen. Expand

I enjoyed it. This is not a pop album or commercial album by any means. This must be an album of love from Scarlett, because doing a goth I enjoyed it. This is not a pop album or commercial album by any means. This must be an album of love from Scarlett, because doing a goth version of Tom Waits' material is not something that the regular population would be attracted to. I applaud her for doing something she loves instead of just being another vapid pop star wannabe. Expand

Sure she is not a great singer but its def a cool project with an interesting combination of artists and worth a listen. Expand

I couldn't make it past track five. This is some of the worst music I've heard in years. Scarlett's voice is an atonal I couldn't make it past track five. This is some of the worst music I've heard in years. Scarlett's voice is an atonal nightmare. There's no way any legitimate music critic should be giving this mess the kind of scores it's been getting. Absolutely horrible! Expand
