Village Voice (Consumer Guide)

Since all the lines make sense, and almost all the stanzas almost make sense, you keep waiting for the songs to make sense. And waiting, and waiting, through calm, memorable arrangements that are never in a hurry.

Alternative Press

These songs are silly without being cloying. [May 2005, p.134]

80

Junkmedia

An almost uniformly excellent outing.

Under The Radar

The production and arrangements on End Of Love are more varied and exciting than on Snide's previous efforts. [#8, p.106]

80

The Onion (A.V. Club)

End Of Love tracks like "The Sound Of German Hip-Hop," "Tiny European Cars," and "Jews For Jesus Blues" tell sketchy stories that describe moments of surprising awareness.

All Music Guide

Clem Snide's fifth album holds no surprises for anyone who has heard albums one through four. End of Love is just as whip smart, goofy, and satisfying as any of them.

Mojo

Barzelay's eye for quirky detail and ear for delicious melody keeps a nice balance to things. [Jun 2005, p.105]

80

Magnet

Sharply written and softly played, the perfectly bittersweet End Of Love balances the books. [#67, p.87]

80

Paste Magazine

Triangulates the common ground between Luna, American Music Club and Red House Painters. [#14, p.105]

75

Entertainment Weekly

You'll find yourself laughing through the tears. [25 Feb 2005, p.102]

70

Q Magazine

A winning collection of giddy, C&W laments. [Jun 2005, p.111]

70

Rolling Stone

[Barzelay's] sharp eye and endearingly nerdy voice enlivens his band's meticulous acoustic pitter-patter.

Stylus Magazine

Contemplative and comforting, this is inoffensive Americana for the brainy set.

Pitchfork

End of Love isn't Barzalay's best collection of songs, and the production tends to gloss over the instruments so songs like "Collapse" and "When We Become" sound subdued and blandly unobtrusive.

Uncut

Still shambles too freely but features stellar moments. [Jun 2005, p.108]

60

PopMatters

This smart and sophisticated country-rock however, is punctuated by uninspired songs that sound like outtakes from Recovering the Satellites.

Tudeage gave it a9:
Once you hear this band, you can't get them out of your head.

[Anonymous] gave it a7:
I like this, but it's not their best. Soft Spot is one of my favorite albums, and The Ghost of Fashion is really good, so check those out before you make your way to this one.

ws williams gave it a9:
"(You Make Me Wanna Break) Something Beautiful" is definitely going on my manic depressive mix iPod playlist. The whole album is pretty humorous and melodic.

Zaphod Beeblebrox gave it a10:
'Made for TV Movie' is a very cool song as well as 'Fill Me With Your Light.' Overallt he album is solid and though Clem's rhythm never amazes you, the lyrics are always a good time. I'd also like to say hello to the guy/girl who has to read all these comments. Must be fantastic.

Dan B. gave it an8:
This is not the best Clem Snide album, but it is good overall and if you like any of their older stuff, you'll like this. Their recordings, even the best ones, are never as good as their live shows. Definitely go see them live, they're almost always perfect - and then while you're buy a copy of this disc there.

anna gave it a10:
this band is so much better!
