Sonicnet
Throughout the album, Cole & co. offer up one pop nugget after another, all carefully honed through warts-and-all shows held in New York over the last few years. The result is that The Negatives isn't just Cole's most consistent disc in 11 years; it's also quite possibly his best ever.

A gentle, finely-wrought memory of an album, The Negatives won't change lives, but it will charm and occasionally haunt them.

Cole, at age 40, seems comfortable with himself and his career -- quirks, blemishes, and all -- and one would be hard pressed to find any of his U.K. '80s contemporaries making such a strong, winningly melodic album... if they're still making albums at all.

If a weak link exists it's only that the surprises are few, but in reality it's for that very reason that Cole's music is so comfortable.

Singing in an airily accented voice that brings to mind fellow Brit popsters Robyn Hitchcock and John Wesley Harding, Cole evokes aural images of indie radio circa 1985.

It seems hard to believe that the man who made this album is the same one responsible for the 1984's still splendid Rattlesnakes.

Everyone needs to have a doomed romantic stage, but Lloyd's is going on twenty years.... The lyrical juvenilia is a bit of a shame, because this is a solid collection of pop songs otherwise.

Return to Form for Lloyd Cole, very catchy songs, good lyrics, Highly Recomended
Daren S. gave it a 7:
The man has not lost his lyrical wit but I feel some of the tracks musically, is not his best.
Mike D. gave it a 10:
Much too long to wait for...but well worth it! Lloyd Cole remains at the top of the singer/songwriter game, and this release bodes well for the future. A wonderful album, full of wit, charm and consistent melody. A must have.
Kellie M. gave it a 10:
If he lost you at the mellowed out Love Story, this one's for you! Amazing amazing amazing return to form, jangly and every single song is a smash! I'm surprised more people aren't talking about this one!
Tibor V. gave it a 10:
How can you not love this album! Girl Impossible is my fav. But all the songs are so beautifu.l
Mike F. gave it a 9:
Amazing album, got to hear for yourself to see what you're missing. Could possibly be his best work yet.
