Release Date: 26 October 2004

Discs: 1 disc

Genre(s): Indie, Rock

Summary

'You're A Woman' is the first album for the Canadian duo of vocalist/drummer Sebastien Grainger and bassist Jesse F. Keeler. It's a drum 'n' bass album in the literal sense of the term, as those are the only two instruments (aside from a very infrequent synthesizer) on the record.

You won’t hear a more exhilarating, dizzying record for a long time to come.

Delusions of Adequacy

You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine is the kind of “feelings” album that fans of noise-rock or hardcore can listen to without fear of being soft. For the rest of us, it’s an indulgence of our more dramatic emotions.

Stylus Magazine

Take the pop from Guns ‘N Roses, take the pomp from Van Halen and take the piss out of uber-serious nu-metal and you’ve got one of the most inventive metal outfits in recent history.

Pitchfork

By turning the rock knob down a notch, DFA79 have kept You're a Woman loud and nasty and ensured a cohesion and unusual degree of listenability.

ShakingThrough.net

They capably cover everything from noisy freakouts ("Turn It Out") to electroclash chillouts ("Sexy Results"), and manage to hold it all together better than bands armed with triple the sonic arsenal.

PopMatters

As for the songs themselves, they're surprisingly varied and accessible; fans of punk, metal, and stoner rock will be the first to gravitate toward this album, but there are tracks that have the potential of reaching a much wider audience.

Neumu.net

Brings together the best parts of metal, hardcore punk-rock and dance-y post-punk for a sound that would be otherwise useless if it weren't for one thing: The boys got "it."

cokemachineglow

A truly rocking dance punk album that fulfills on the promise of a dubious genre; other artists in this so-called movement have only hinted at something this fun and dance-able.

Guido van E gave it a10:
mindblowing piece of music, it's such a shame they stopped.

Will J gave it a10:
Simply amazing. Brain bubbling bass, screaming vocals that are actually good, and those bastards broke up because they got tired of each other after a few months on tour. They should be put on a tribunal, for crimes against the world of music for denying it a succinct pleasure

james d gave it a10:
amazing. the best album of 2004 and one of the best albums this decade. it's so original, loud, and plain awesome. an absolute essential.

jack white gave it an8:
ridiculously good. this is a 2-piece band.. HELLO!!! 2 PIECE BAND!!!!!! check for live video's on youtube, they're even better!

Gnarles gave it a7:
A solid, original album, but hurt by some production and vocal weaknesses. It doesn't have enough sonic punch for the metal side, and lacks enough of a strong vocalist for the dance side. Still, I can't stop playing it. Deliciously volcanic stuff.

Foensson F gave it a9:
A lesson in agressive, but skinny rock!

[Anonymous] gave it a10:
Amazing.
