Summary
The normally prolific DiFranco hasn't released a new album since 1999's 'To The Teeth,' but now she returns with a vengeance: this 2-disc, 2-hour, 29-track collection of new songs. Ani goes solo on about half the tracks; the others feature members of her touring band. Guest musicians include trumpter Jon Hassell, sax man Maceo Parker, and guitarist Lloyd Maines.

Entertainment Weekly
Pick from either the funky Revelling or the more downbeat Reckoning and you'll be rewarded with an intimate new mood or insight, expertly framed by the singer's acoustic-based every-style. [13 Apr 2001, p.76]
Spin
This inspired, two-disc, 29-track set is one part musical grandstand like Prince's Sign O' the Times, one part marital saga like Bruce Springsteen's Tunnel of Love. [5/2001, p.139]
Magnet
She once again raises the bar for her personal best... [#50, p.85]
CDNow
Not every moment of Revelling/Reckoning is a winner. But the record is probably DiFranco's first where all the tags -- staunch D.I.Y.-er, feminist, bisexual folk-punk -- and the baggage of her brutally personal songwriting play second fiddle to the songs found within.

Revelling/Reckoning is a dense, daunting work -- and, quite possibly, her strongest one yet.
While the acoustic simplicity of Reckoning seems thin at first, particularly beside Revelling's sensual, bombastic joy, the croons and ballads grow on you, if not for their melancholy navel-gazing, then for their languid, old-school folksiness.
Revelling/Reckoning is both an accomplished album complimented by a loose-jam of ensemble players and a bare sketchbook where DiFranco sits alone in her room, creating a private universe accessible to anyone with the will to listen.
Read Full Review >Wall of Sound
Supposedly split into two themes, it turns out that the music throughout is interchangeable; any track could have appeared on either CD.

Revelling/Reckoning represents DiFranco at her best and worst.
Read Full Review >Village Voice (Consumer Guide)
This is a double album where the best songwriting never meshes with the best horn writing, which is what gets her juices going these days.
Though the music on Revelling/Reckoning ranges from brilliant to mediocre, DiFranco's bold, descriptive lyrics (as usual) redeem any shortcomings. [#155, p.75]
Blender
Would have benefited from more stringent editing... [Jun/Jul 2001, p.108]

Marcia G gave it a 10:
Love her new album she is amazing. Ani is funky and fresh and she will always be number one in my book.
Emmy C. gave it a 10:
WHAT DO YOU MEAN? Another depressed girl with a guitar? Try a self made folk legend with a guitar, set of drums and bass not to mention killer elastic vocal chords. This album is full of wonderful surprises. The lyrics alone are brilliant never mind the beatiful way she combines the music. I think this album is wonderful and if you give it the attention it commands you will find a wealth of insight and surprises which is just what Ani fans were waiting for.
John M. gave it a 9:
Bombarding (occasionally annoying, "Subdivision" being the very low point) political assertments aside, this is Ani at her best. It is almost impossible to categorize this work; it breaks through so many genres. A welcoming and intriguing listen for anyone who can get past the occassional political ranting sure to piss you off a little.
Andrea B. gave it a 9:
i love this album. i think its great. she incorporates all these genres of music wich adds to the flavor.
Ryan P. gave it a 10:
The best album of the year, She continues to grow and prove she's America's greatest songwriter.
Eric J. gave it a 10:
This album is GREAT! As a big fan I have heard the different changes in her music. It's almost like Ani has taken her listeners on a musical journey speaking the truth about how things are. Now that she's married her music has a more personal sound to it. Well she's awsome!
Jessica gave it a 7:
It really does grow on you, the lyrics are still beautiful, and although Dilate will always be my favorite cd, Revelling/Reckoning comes in 2nd place. Especially Revelling....it really is fantastic, but what else can you expect from an artist who pours herself into her music so much?!
