Uncut
That band’s ambition is intact is remarkable--that they’ve made an album that captures the zeitgeist is maybe even more so.

The album is savvier still, crafted to evoke the spirit and feel of the Eagles' biggest hits.

It's all a testament to the durable Eagles footprint on the pop landscape.
Bitter or sweet, the Eagles sidestep self-parody, serving up the rarest of musical blends: freshly brewed nostalgia you'll actually want to savor.
Read Full Review >Los Angeles Times
Sprawling, but pristinely produced, animated by righteous indignation and regret, this double album offers everything fans want and detractors scorn.
There is more than nostalgia at work here. Lyrically at least, the cocaine cowboys of yore strive to engage with the modern world’s ills and idiosyncrasies.
The Eagles' original studio albums were all models of clenched-gleam detail, and Long Road suffers from sprawl.
It is an auspicious beginning for a double album so strong it's almost irritating that it took so long to release it.

The best songs here are the least ambitious: love laments that coleader Glenn Frey and bassist Timothy B. Schmit both sing the hell out of.

They're proving that they're still commercially relevant, but the calculated, tepid Long Road Out of Eden isn't likely to influence another generation of musicians.

There are some very bad lyrics on this album. [Dec 2007, p.99]
Q Magazine
Eagles may be victims of a world in which their signature sound has been distilled into oblivion. [Dec 2007, p.110]
Austin Chronicle
Fitting that the Eagles' first studio gathering since 1979's The Long Run should be a Wal-Mart exclusive, since the entire 2-CD affair is a generic sprawl aimed for the largest (read: lowest) common denominator.

Disc one sounds like the band's Desperado years left out in the rain--damp, shrunken and fetid, with songs such as Guilty of the Crime and Fast Company giving out as much spark as a dying novelty lighter.

Clay K gave it an8:
Randy Meisner (Take It To The Limit), Bernie Leadon (Earlybird, Train Leaves Here This Morning) and Don Felder (Hotel California) were also Eagles and I hope someday they will play together again for us. I'll be buying the CD after listening on YouTube, will cruise with it.
Martin D. gave it a10:
A fantastic double CD that warrants and rewards frequent playing. As good as anything they did 30+ years ago.
ken w. gave it a2:
Felder and Walsh were one of the the greatest guitar tandems ever. To think the Eagles could go on without Felder and with a fading Walsh is just silly. This album relies entirely on Henley's tired angst and Frey's inane lyrics. The Eagles have gone from a great band to all that is wrong with the music industry: constant infighting, out of control egos, putting money above music, constant repackaging of the same music (how many "definitive hits" albums does one band need?), outrageous ticket prices that exclude everyone but the affluent... And then to make an album about corporate greed just screams of hypocrisy. On top of it all, it just isn't any good. Save your money and go buy The Long Run instead.
Bill M gave it an8:
If Hotel CA and One of These Nights are 10s, then this album is an 8. The Henley songs are great, the Frey songs are very good, Walsh songs OK, Schmit songs are OK to bad. This album well exceeded my expectations.
Tom H gave it a10:
I loved the album. I thought it was fantastic! I was appalled by all the low ratings it got from the magazines, but I loved it.
Greg P gave it a7:
A few stinkers, but otherwise some very good Eagles music. Some of the reviews posted to this site read like critics whining for a stage on which to spout their musical "gravitas" and intellect. Over analyzing music from the Eagles is probably a waste of time, whereas simply enjoying their music is good enough for me. It's just the Eagels for crying out loud.
Samuel L gave it an8:
I usually don't respond to other users, but Ryu, you just might be legally retarded. The Eagles are one of the greatest bands ever, with a unique style and incredible talent. If you take the time to listen to their songs, you will realize their depth and brilliance. Not surprising that it goes over so many peoples' heads. That being said, this album is weaker than their classic albums. Please, if you don't take the time to actually listen to their albums and make thoughtful judgment, then do us all a favor and not post comments that depict an I.Q comfortably lower than this album's Metacritic score.
