Entertainment Weekly
Composed of more hits than misses, Nightbird soars. [21 Jan 2005, p.88]
All Music Guide
Smart, moving, approachable, and well constructed, Nightbird is Erasure's mature masterpiece.

One can't help but miss Erasure's old-school glee. [Apr 2005, p.116]
Rolling Stone
One could easily mistake Nightbird for something the duo made in the Eighties -- and if you love Erasure, you won't care.

Each shimmering track lights a momentary spark, but the attraction proves fleeting. [6 Feb 2005]
Alternative Press
Longtime fans will be comforted by Nightbird, even if it comes off like the fluff Giorgio Moroder might've rejected after a coke bender. [Mar 2005, p.138]
Mojo
This is undeniably a better album than they've delivered in some while, but... there still seems to be a lack of conviction in their execution. [Feb 2005, p.100]
New Musical Express
They've stuck the bleeps on autopilot, the beats on cruise control, and can only be bothered writing a handful of half-decent tunes. [5 Feb 2005, p.50]
Q Magazine
They just sound bored. [Feb 2005, p.98]
The Guardian
How can something that makes so lavish with both emotion and production leave so little aftertaste?

Seems dated. [Feb 2005, p.73]
Magnet
Only a couple of tracks on Nightbird flicker with any sparks of life. [#67, p.96]

J gave it a10:
Critics do not review an album based on the content alone, but rather try to compare the content with other albums. My point is that this is an amazing album. How can you give this album a bad review? Well, that's easy... compare this album against wonderland, circus, innocents, chorus, erasure self-titled, and cowboy. I really feel that we are the critics, because they are so damn negative all the time and it seems like they never appreciate fine art such as this.
martin gore gave it a10:
good job out there "breath" is almost as good as my "precious" single.
Anon gave it an8:
This is their best album since 1995's "Erasure."
Mark D gave it an8:
Cracking return to form and is worth the purchase price just for the classic "Breath"... great stuff lads...
Dave N gave it a9:
Absolutely flawless synth-pop album, easily among Erasure's best. It has an effortless flow and majesty. It's lush without being cloying, cinematic without being precious. Don't believe the middling reviews, this is great stuff.
Iain S gave it a10:
One seriously good album, Bell really does pull out some of the very best lyrics I've ever heard. And the '80's (Jarresque) style is simply brilliant, setting it apart from every other album in the charts today! Well done to Erasure.
Paulo gave it an8:
I just saw them in concert in Miami last night and they delivered an awesome show...about 1 1/2 hours of non-stop music. If you are an Erasure fan this album will not disappoint. They have returned to their roots. Keep it coming Andy and Vince!
