Summary
The Depeche Mode songwriter's second solo album is just like his first (1989's 'Counterfeit'): all covers. Here, he tackles Brian Eno's "By This River," The Velvet Underground's "Candy Says" (oh my), Nick Cave's "In My Time of Dying," Iggy Pop's "Tiny Girls," and seven other works by your favorite artists.

Billboard
Gore's reworkings sparkle with visceral emotion, aching vulnerability, and sublime intensity.

This record is a high-quality package of music that will keep most DM fans happy, but is not exactly earth-shaking in any way.

Counterfeit 2 correctly presents itself as a box of hobbyish bric-a-brac for friends and completists.

In part gripping.... But Gore doesn't always push his voice to its brilliantly effete/effeminate extremes. [May 2003, p.104]
All Music Guide
Gore is almost too polite to these songs, but surely that can be forgiven when his love for them is so apparent.

Gore's brittle choirboy voice lacks the depth and grandeur of Gahan's, but he still gamely takes on some adventurous choices. [Jun 2003, p.108]
Blender
The musical treatment is Depeche Mode-lite, setting generally passionate songs in an antiseptic electronic context, and Gore's over-earnest voice lacks the presence to reinvigorate them. [May 2003, p.120]
Q Magazine
While his taste is textbook classic, his arrangements are not. [May 2003, p.104]

Be it counterfeit or genuine - Martin Gore has never failed his fans and listeners. He made Jonh Lennon's 'Oh my love' sounds like his very own. Brillant!

Great Album...thats all
Chris H gave it a 9:
The Gore sung songs have always been my favorite in Depeches catalogue. So a whole album of Gore is a treat for me. Highlights are "Stardust" "In My Time Of Dying" and "Loverman". He was amazing this past week in LA as well.
