Entertainment Weekly
A solid old-school effort with a Ph.D. in pain. [20 May 2005, p.77]
90
All Music Guide
One of his very best records.

75
Los Angeles Times
A refreshingly honest outing that still maintains a high fun factor. [15 May 2005]
67
E! Online
With the macho posturing out of the way, it makes it easier to appreciate his powerful voice and million-dollar arrangements.

60
The New York Times
Part of his appeal is that he's never totally believable: on previous albums, you had the feeling that he wasn't quite as hard as he first seemed; on this one, you get the feeling he's not quite as soft. [16 May 2005]
60
Blender
Keith and co-writer Scotty Emerick can't resist country cliches, but at least they use them brilliantly. [Jul 2005, p.118]
50
Stylus Magazine
Honkytonk University is one missed opportunity after another.

Rolling Stone
The most downbeat record he's ever made, with none of his usual humor. [19 May 2005, p.81]

Jeff M gave it a10:
If you don't like this cd you dont like country. His most well rounded effort.

Sam D gave it a0:
i told my friends how toby keith could never suck anymore than his prior albums, I had told them a deep, cold, heartless lie. He make britney spears look like john lennon

Benjamin T gave it a10:
Oh my gosh..... People need to start appreciating a good singer and songwriter. I have been listening to Toby Kieth since I was 4; and im 14 now. Toby Kieth had really out done himself now. ''She Ain't Hooked On Me No More'' is great. One of the best I've heard from Toby. All I got to say to toby is keep it up!

cj souza gave it a10:
i love your song i aint as good as i once was

Daniel S gave it a10:
Excellent!..All Good!...Songs like Honkytonk U.(gettin down with my boys in Baghdad)...Then to top it off..Merle Haggard is on this CD too!..Every song on this CD is Excellent...Every One!..Way to go Toby!...Supporting our Troops...Got Merle ..on your fightin side...only if Dale Earnhardt was with us..he would be on this too!...These are "good guys" and .."If you dont Love it..Leave it"..Just ask Merle.

Jeff S gave it a0:
I admit it. I havent heard any of his music. But that horrible Ford truck commercial he was in.... he murdered my inner child...killed my faith in humanity

Venus S gave it a2:
Well, let us give our thanks to Toby Trash. I haven't been this excited about a country singer since Billy Ray Cirus. In fact I heard they were gonna join up for a a tribute to Mullet- Rock, a fresh new scene straight out of the arm pit of Cincinnati.
