Observer Music Monthly
Liars might have moved a little more towards the mainstream, but they're still a long, long way from easy listening.

Liars is an ingenuous reflection of a band in total control of their wild creativity.
Read Full Review >All Music Guide
Liars wanders wherever it wants to, touching on noise, prog, hard rock, punk, industrial and other styles the band has flirted with in the past, as well as a few uncharted ones.... In a lesser band's hands, this kaleidoscopic approach could be a muddled mess, but it makes for Liars' most entertaining album yet.
Read Full Review >Drowned In Sound
Far more accessible than anything the act have produced in recent years, Liars shifts perceptions in the way most have come to expect, but with the dense conceptual themes and boundaries limited it is as if they have met most listeners halfway only to lure them back into their own sordid comfort zone, littered with the contents of a fifteen-year-old's bedroom.
If it doesn't quite confound like "They Were Wrong" or thrill like "Drum's Not Dead," Liars still finds the band ignoring whatever you thought you wanted or needed from them, and doing what they damn well please.

The band’s self-titled fourth record takes only seconds to signal the triumphant homecoming of the guitar.
If Liars have reached the post-masterpiece phase of their career where they hone their craft to a needle’s point, Liars is an absolutely brilliant jump-off.
Read Full Review >The Onion (A.V. Club)
For Liars, forgoing heady concepts and willful obtuseness--embracing rock music instead of deconstructing it--may actually be the boldest move yet.
As it stands, Liars is an appropriately titled, highly worthwhile piece of work that the band and any of its fans should be extremely proud of.

The stylistic buffet has enough strength to survive a handful of duds.

'Leather Prowler' is as dank and industrial as you'd hope--but the emphasis is now on songwriting. [Sep 2007, p.112]
New Musical Express
You could accuse Liars of abandoning all of their high-art concepts and otherworldly thoughts so they could secure their place on a tour of America's enormodomes with Interpol. Well, you could if this album wasn't so perfect.

Liars is only marginally easier to get into then "Drums Not Dead"--but something has to be said for an album being enjoyable, and on that scale, Liars is another monumental leap forward. [Summer 2007, p.74]
Urb
The band recalibrates toward rock structures but doesn't ditch the textures and sound experimentation of the recent past, resulting in songs with sonic depth and focus. [Sep/Oct 2007, p.129]
Paste Magazine
Liars might not be as singular as the band’s past albums, but even a relatively normal outing from these guys is still a puzzle that takes time to solve. Rest assured, it’s time well spent.

The group's self-titled fourth album may be the maverick trio's most straightforward yet. [Oct 2007, p.160]
PopMatters
Each track bears the sound of a confident, secure band of artists who now know they are ready for prime-time, and can weather the onslaught of attention without compromise.

Too cool for school? Maybe. But if Liars aren’t anybody’s idea of easy listening, by gum, they’re never dull, and for that, we salute them.
'Houseclouds' is dance pop of hit-worthy catchiness and the taut, pounding 'Freak Out' puts to shame most contemporary psych outfits. [Sep 2007, p.133]
Blender
It's a shockingly entertaining record riddled with moody hooks. [Sep 2007, p.128]
The Wire
Sometimes Liars sounds like a group whose previous sonic journeying has inspired a fresh look at the familiar. All too often, however, it's as though, having stepped outside the confines of conventional song, they can never believe in it enough to return. [Sep 2007, p.56]
Austin Chronicle
The Brooklyn trio's fourth album has made it out of the terrible twos, and growing pains have produced a curious pastiche.

Liars is all about that Liars blueprint, and in that sense the album can get redundant.
They have turned in their most conventional set of songs yet. [Sep 2007. p.95]
Tiny Mix Tapes
The lack of a unifying theme on this particular album leaves their past influences far downstream and without a paddle.
They have built up a group of songs so restless and unsatisfying that a group of teenagers with the proper training could have made them, or likely something better.

Marc gave it a9:
Very strong album. It makes me wanna freak out.
Tim T. gave it a3:
They lied... This album is like a really bad sandwitch. The first two tracks are really good, and the last two tracks are ok... The whole middle is just noise. Not all that impressive.
Daniel gave it a9:
Liars has made an almost perfect mix of everything I like on this album. I hear traces, the Stooges, Can, Sonic Youth, Primal Scream, MBV, TVOTR etc.. The most varied and interesting album of the year.
Patrick M gave it a9:
I'm a little bothered that ridiculous opinions like Dusted and TMT are include, yet antiMusic is not represented. Any rating below an 80 for this album is completely foolish. Clear Island itself make this a great album.
Gman gave it an8:
Their debut may have been a damn good album that pre-empted the whole post-punk revival but it was They Were Wrong So We Drowned when they started to make genuinely exciting, innovative music. Critics couldn't keep up with them then and they still can't. Drum's Not Dead may have been their masterwork but Liars sees them refusing to stand still and rest on their laurels. There's a definite Psychocandy influence on some tracks and a much more song based structure in general but it sure ain't commercial by any standards. A band that make music their way and don't care what the hell anybody else thinks or expects. It's not everyone's cup of tea (Kaiser Chiefs fans run away now) but for those of us who want challenging and interesting music, Liars (along with Animal Collective) are as good as it gets.
Chris I. gave it a9:
okay i'm not going to get into details on why this record is awesome, it just plainly is.
kde gave it a4:
The production is what really fails many of the songs. While some of the songs may or may not be fully flushed out... i still don't think any of them are terribly gripping. This is a band that has steadily declined since their debut.
