Summary
"Nathaniel Merriweather" is merely the latest incarnation of producer Dan "The Automator" Nakamura, best known for his work with Dr. Octagon and the Gorillaz. Merriweather was last seen on 1999's Handsome Boy Modeling School debut, and here he is joined in his new band, Lovage, by Kid Koala, Damon Albarn, Prince Paul, Faith No More's Mike Patton, and the Elysian Fields' Jennifer Charles, among others.

The Wire
Superficially, Lovage is a continuation of the Handsome Boy Modeling School aesthetic that collides HipHop, rock and electronica into an ironic hipster epic. [#213, p. 59]
Q Magazine
Coy, genail and funny... a potent antidote to the usual chill-out porridge. [#184, p.140]
Splendid
Those of you who choose to get in on the ground floor of this superlative venture they call Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By will not be disappointed.

Lovage's schtick wears pretty thin by album's end--but if it works like it's supposed to, you won't need to play it that long. [Feb 2002, p.108]
All Music Guide
While Nakamura is quite possibly one of the most accomplished beat processors in the realm of art hip-hop/electronica, his strict-composer approach on this project is occasionally inaccessible and at times unlistenable.

Works both as satire and actual make-out fare. [Feb/Mar 2002, p.113]
Vibe
Lovage only works some of the time--the record's sense of humor often trumps its music. [Feb 2002, p.123]
Pitchfork
My biggest gripe about Lovage is that it finds a number of clearly talented artists constructing the same song continually without variation.

Not even the added muscle of playaz like Kid Koala, Afrika Bambaataa, Plug 3, Prince Paul and Mike Patton manage to lift this album above the low level pastiche it seems happy to be.

Turk Rocks gave it a10:
Well HELLO THERE! This is an album I have not heard of until tonight. Wow! Nice work again! Never seem to stop astounding me! Gorillaz - Original, beautiful, wonderful
Keith W gave it a10:
The only down side to the album are the three skit like tracks. The instrumentation is excellent and the vocals are suppurb.
Thea Sasseen gave it a10:
love it...
Lilith S gave it a 10:
Excellent...orgasmic...what else!
Ken L gave it a 10:
This is a great record skip the skits though The singing, especially that of Jennifer Charles is top notch and her lyrics are clever and spot on as well, Mike does a good job keeping pace, though letting himself be sensual is sometimes out of his reach, and he reverts back to being a jokey bellower
James M. gave it a 10:
just perfect, no other word can describe mike patton and jennifer charles' music together
