All Music Guide

A perfect commingling of the spirits of dub reggae and mid-'70s soul and groove jazz.... NdegeOcello's finest moment on record thus far.

Launch.com

In austere style and apolitical theme, it's similar to Ndegocello's 1996 outing Bitter, but this is the work of an older, wiser woman who can view that album's romantic failures within a bigger picture.

Urb

She's made her Marvin Gaye album, a sweet collection of dreamy, reggae-kissed gems. [Dec 2003, p.86]

86

ShakingThrough.net

She manages to gush with happiness while still maintaining a clear focus on her craft, thanks to the unwavering integrity she brings to her lyrical phrasing and musical arrangements.

Blender

She shows the breadth of her talent and the depth of her sentiment. [Nov 2003, p.118]

Mojo

An extended groove workout, akin to Erykah Badu's Worldwide Underground EP. [Jan 2004, p.102]

Uncut

A sensual, sumptuous overload. [Jan 2004, p.116]

60

Rolling Stone

Unfortunately, most of the songs... are simply retreads of past works, with only the occasional fresh perception.

Vibe

Though Comfort Woman does not match the rebellion of past efforts, its overall joy is infectious. [Dec 2003, p.214]

The Guardian

You end up wishing Ndegeocello would grab someone and go get a room.

It's all wonderfully sensual, only there's no passion or intensity. [Feb 2004, p.105]

The Onion (A.V. Club)

The last adjective that could ever describe NdegeOcello's music is "dull," but that's just the damnation to apply to the new Comfort Woman, along with "inexplicable," "meandering," and "inexplicably meandering."

Her music is smooth and mellow. Perfect love music, as well as everyday music. I will definitely be looking for a next album

Best album of 2003.

Marc P gave it a 7:
Smoothess CD buy Meshelle yet, More in keeping with great listening grooves while still remaining very jazzy. Nice CD!!!

[Anonymous] gave it a 10:
album of the year.

Charlie C. gave it a 4:
I've enjoyed Ndegeocello's last few albums, but this latest release sounds like prog-rock Stevie Wonder. There's a sameness to the beats, the lyrics are somewhat shallow odes to "forgiveness" and "love," and Ndegeocello's voice stays at the same tone through pretty much the entire album. Maybe something to listen to in the background, but I didn't find this record worth a close listen. Ndegeocello is a fine artist, and I was largely disappointed with this effort.
