There's a tragic humanism in these songs that almost recalls "Dead Man Walking".... There's a rare depth beneath his subtle guitar and tired, textured voice, one that resonates beyond any little musical coterie.

It's all very precious stuff, sounding like some of Sebadoh's best material. Kids who've eaten up the whole indie-rock thing thus far will go bananas over Pedro the Lion.

An interesting album, spooky in spots, but other than the terrific "Slow and Steady," this one's a curiosity.

Winners Never Quit plugs along on two gears-- the "ballad" and the "rocker." The ballads rely on obvious signifiers like acoustic guitars, brushed cymbals, and pianos. Moody!

Zack S gave it a10:
I wanted so badly to give it a 9 based on the title track, which is slow and somewhat sludgy, but damned if I don't just keep coming back to this one time and time again. It's by far my favorite, exploring themes of religion, murder, relationships, family, and salvation in the twisted, quixotic way that only Dave Bazan can. This and Control are just unbeatable for me.
Leroy BY gave it an 8:
This album is very honest lyrically. It's very musically simple, but if you're an indie rock fan you may or may not like this CD. It is most definitly nit happy, but I personally strongly recommend the album. Listen to the lyrics and enjoy the mussic
Rob gave it a 10:
this album is way underrated...i think it's on of the best albums of all time. it really makes you think. in more ways than one. Avoiding being caught doesn't mean yer conscience is clear....
ruben r gave it a 10:
this album is fucking great
andy gave it a 9:
great concept album, first couple of times I didn't get the story but now it's clear as a bell, a good record to slit your wrists to.
Dave E. gave it a 10:
Awesome album. It took me a few listens-to to finally get the story, which was part of the joy of the album: more layers just kept unfurling. In short, it's the story of two brothers who are both "bad people," one of them a self-righteous "Christian" politician who skews an election so he'd win (A Mind of Her Own) then kills his wife for trying to tell on him. The other is an alcoholic who was arrested for another DUI (To Protect the Family Name). Excellent album, it really sucks you into itself.
Christine V. gave it a 10:
This CD makes me cry :'( in a good way :)
