E! Online
With dashes of Nick Cave darkness, surf-guitar twang, ugly '60s pop and Velvet Underground-y noise, the Raveonettes offer more variations on the dense tuned-down sound that's overtaking America.

This band could, and should, go mega. [Jan 2003, p.99]
Q Magazine
It really is hard to distinguish between the eight tracks here, but when a theme's this good, the variants are never going to be a problem. [Mar 2003, p.113]
Stylus Magazine
A 21 minute 41 second short burst of booming, stylish rock alchemy.

As easily taken for a salute to '60s transistor-radio pop as for Jesus and Mary Chain worship. [28 Mar 2003, p.68]
Splendid
There's probably nothing here you haven't heard before, but it's all wrapped up in a particularly appetizing package and garnished with lots of artful discord.

Imagine a two-piece BRMC if they'd grown up in a sub-zero landscape in Denmark where the only cultural sign-posts are trashy sado-pulp novels, distorted Velvets bootlegs and endless re-runs of Marlon Brando in classic biker-flick 'The Wild One'.

A scrappy little album that at times has a frustrating same-y-ness to it, but with each of the disc's tunes lasting no longer than three minutes, the Raveonettes' proto-punk formula never outstays its welcome.

A Sonic Youth sneer, VU drone, and the Jesus & Mary Chain fuzz-tone shackling.
Beneath it all is an album that betrays its bland uniformity after just a few listens; a collection that for all its appearances of excitement, is actually more than a little boring.

Little more than comic book soundbites, wilting in the jagged, feverish shadow of their illustrious forefathers.

A rockabilly Jesus And Mary Chain. [Mar 2003, p.114]
Pitchfork
One starts to wonder if all the Jesus & Mary Chain comparisons flying around The Raveonettes aren't due to their J&MC-like tendency to write the same song over and over again, as well as their ability to kick up a right good wall of white noise.

While most of the music on Whip It On is somewhere in the vicinity of cool, the vocals sound like two people trying out for a Jesus and Mary Chain tribute band. [Jan 2003, p.101]

Sam W. gave it a10:
Easily one of the best albums I've ever had the fortune of listening to. I don't understand the critique against the tracks sounding the same, though. They are in the same genre, and thus, they sound somewhat alike. *I* sure can tell one song from another.

Fabulous noisy fun
R Combs gave it a 6:
Sounds like Timbuk 3 on "Psychocandy". This duo shows promise, but they need to find their own "cool".
Mike K gave it a 10:
super
Kurt H gave it a 9:
After having owned the CD for several weeks now, I can confidently say that I like it. A whole lot. Having each song in B flat minor does make this challenging to listen to from start to finish without being a little irked by what one reviewer above called a "frustrating same-y-ness," and that is, in fact, the only place The Raveonettes fall short for me. Every single song, when listened to on its own, is excellent. As an entire album, it's a little bit too much, perhaps. If the songs didn't work so incredibly well, I would have given this a 7. The CD earns one extra point on the merits of each individual song, and one extra point for the exhilirating potential of it all. As an aside, even casual fans should make a concerted effort to see The Raveonettes live. I caught them in Detroit in May and watched the whole venue be won over by the performance. It was, bottom line, spectacular.
