Billboard
TSAC have spun their most lush and intricately produced long-player yet.... "Oui" wisely bumps the electronics to secondary status, giving the album a much more unified, live band feel missing from "The Fawn".... One of this year's most enjoyable albums.

Oui is stunning easy listening in recession, but up close, it's genius. The production, the arrangements, the instrumentation, the electronics would sound cumbersome in the hands of the unexperienced, but the Sea and Cake fuse these elements with economy and care. If Oui doesn't erupt like an outright revolution, it's only because the band makes it look it too easy.

Effortless, breathy pop music that you just have to close your eyes and smile to.

Their simplest, softest sound yet. While 1997's The Fawn thrived in tender disarray, this 10-track outing sparkles with a warm and graceful confidence.

Quite possibly the finest of the group' s five albums to date.... A sophisticated pop pleasure from start to finish, Oui is the aural equivalent of a perpetual Indian summer.
On Oui, the Sea and Cake continue to pursue their instrumental excursions as they evolve decisively into an art-drone groove band.
Oui may lack songs as vivid as those found on the [Sam] Prekop and [Archer] Prewitt records, but it has enough charm of its own to recommend it. [#201, p.63]
Magnet
Liquid guitar licks, bobbing bass lines, slow-tumbling vibes and lush strings float in and out of the mix, wrapping snugly around Sam Prekop's mellow croon. There's nothing life-changing here, but it's nice; and sometimes nice is enough. [#47, p.116]
Spin
Music tailor-made for the world's hippest elevators. [Nov. 2000, p.200]
Trouser Press
A record which adheres closely to the formula but fails to generate any sort of spark from it.

dave p v gave it an8:
A high 8. Only because 'the biz' is a 10, and 'the fawn' a nine. (they should allow a 8.5) There is a strange perfection at work here. The music equivalent of a very smooth, mellow and sweet scotch-- you have no choice but to love it, as your belly is warmed. 'The Biz' blows your mind, this massages. Great stuff.
Joel R. gave it a 9:
While "The Biz" is my favorite (and I seem to be one of the only ones left to feel so), this is a glorious album. The Pitchfork review perfectly reflects my feelings on TSAC. They have been my favorite band since my first listening to "Nassau" sometime in '95. Huzzah for The Sea and Cake!
Chip R. gave it a 10:
Great TSAC. These guys are making easy for us to have ears.
