The Onion (A.V. Club)
With his lush Blue Carpet Treatment, Snoop Dogg finally seems intent on building and expanding his musical legacy, rather than merely coasting on it.

A strong statement from a veteran still pushing his artistic boundaries. [Dec 2006, p.170]
RapReviews.com
There's little doubt that "Tha Blue Carpet Treatment" ultimately qualifies as a successful follow-up to "R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta) - The Masterpiece," although there's also little doubt that Snoop is not pushing any new boundaries or exceeding already set expectations.

What the album actually does is present a calming looseness-- nothing shocking or obscure, and better for it.
Even if the disc’s too long and there’s too much coasting here and there to qualify it as near-classic, there’s more than enough to convince doubters that Snoop can still deliver.

Snoop sounds exceptionally comfortable, perhaps even reinvigorated.
It signals a return to his gangsta roots and the street sound of his breakthrough album, Doggystyle.

"Tha Blue Carpet Treatment" and its no-frills West Coast productions are refreshingly focused on Snoop, not his guests.

Snoop has found a happy balance between pop and hardcore. [25 Nov 2006]
The New York Times
A few too many of these songs sound like Snoop-by-the-numbers. [20 Nov 2006]
NOW Magazine
Snoop plays to his storytelling strength, crafting a record to show he still cares about the music.

Tha Blue Carpet Treatment, for all its faults, isn’t really an awful album--it’s more a matter of the idea that when you’re given a daunting 78 minutes of media (and no skits, which is awesome), it’s easy to find a whole pile of problems.

Snoop's patter soon descends into G-funk pastiche and cretinous misogyny. [Feb 2007, p.85]
Spin
He's just retracing past missteps. [Dec 2006, p.100]

Dante E gave it a10:
High five to Snoop. This album still notes that he can be old and still be a great emcee. Keep it up.
matthew l gave it an8:
his best work in a long time, im proud of snoop on this one....vato, gangbangin 101 and gimme a light= fav. tracks
C Graham gave it an8:
What do ya'll critics want from Snoop? If you want sensitive lyrics, check Common. If you want fresh flow, check Ghostface. Snoop's just bein' Snoop. He might not be saying anything new (but who in rap is), but his flow is still smooth and impeccable, and this is the best produced Snoop album post-Doggystyle.
Jay D gave it a10:
Yo, yo, yo! This ain't Doggystyle, or The Chronic, but Snoop still got it. Still his crazy old self! You gotta love it!
Snoop Dog gave it a0:
"This isn't my best album... in fact, it may be my worst." --Snoop Dog (yeah right, this guy has a 3 year-old's education, he'll never talk like that). "SUCK IT! SNOOP DOG, SUCK IT!"
Kahron S gave it a10:
This is his best album since Doggystyle.....vastly improved lyrically.
Brian H gave it a7:
This is a solid album, with snoop doing what snoop does (or what snoop did early in his career). I really hate those who haven't heard an album and go ahead and rate it (Todd W). And, Todd W, if you claim to have purchased the album, you are an idiot. Only an idiot purchases something they knew they would dislike from the start. Which based upon your comments, this is clearly the case. You don't have to like the rap music, but don't rate something with which you are not familiar. There is a term for speaking on which something you don't know, it is called ignorance.
