Almost Cool
In the end, it doesn't really matter that it's the soundtrack to a video game that I'll never play. It's a new Amon Tobin album (and a good one at that), and that's all I need.
This isn't a revolutionary album for Tobin but it's a lot of fun, and works surprisingly well on its own, given the stringent requirements it had to meet.

Spins a web of eerie jazz-junglist percussion. [22 Jan 2005, p.51]
All Music Guide
As the accompaniment to game play, Chaos Theory is a standout in its field; just don't expect it to be as memorable as the typical Amon Tobin effort.

Tobin delivers fiercely programmed, seriously dark material. [Mar 2005, p.104]
ShakingThrough.net
There’s little doubt that Chaos Theory does what it's meant to do: provide solid background noise to special-ops, night vision-wearing virtual stealth warriors. Compared to the rest of Tobin’s catalog, however, it’s merely a mildly engaging diversionary maneuver.

If all you’re looking for is more Tobin material, then you’ve come to the right place. If you’re expecting anything more, you’d best look elsewhere.

It's clever and interesting, but it's hard to escape the feeling that an opportunity to expand and mutate his sound even more went partially wasted. [Apr 2005, p.104]

I'm not easy to wind up but what does annoy me is when bland Coldplay fans and other people with no real musical culture/taste suggest some of the music that artists I like (Squarepusher/Amon Tobin) sounds a little bit like computer game music. This was of course rubbish because the music is far deeper than any of the Coldpaly they listen too, which is why it is discussed by so many critics, even if it does not have a large fanbase. They have all sorts of influences too like jazz. Amon Tobin is an "intelligent" artist. ...wait a second, it appears I was wrong. Amon Tobin has released music for a computer game. What a kick in the balls. Mostly geeky overdramatic tracks with one or two better ones.
Kanon A gave it a10:
the most gorgeous soundtrack ever, incredibly melodic and thrilling
Brad K gave it a9:
Hey, if you take this openly, you can like this. The goal of the noise and such is to convey a tone, and people that are immediately turned off to these sounds, or have never given them the chance, will never understand it. This is personally one of my favorite albums, and I'm getting the 5.1 surround DVD.
Mario V gave it a0:
This album is not anywhere near incredible, and as for intricate, all of Amon's stuff is over complicated and over noisy, if that's what you mean by intricate. Oh, dis.
[Anonymous] gave it a6:
Yes, it's Amon Tobin so it's going to be pretty good at least. But it seems illogical to release a record that's so obviously meant as background music as an album meant for listening to on its own... With such a large gap in media focus and advertising between this album and Amon Tobin's superior previous efforts, I feel a lot of people are going to get a bad impression from this CD...
dave b gave it a7:
This is a thoroughly good, enjoyable ablum if you can suspend your disbelief and give it a chance. The arranged noise becomes moving music only if you have an open mind. Otherwise, you might like a tune or two but not the whole album.
Robert G gave it a10:
Anyone who dislikes this album just dosn't have a good enough sound system.
