Summary

'Runaway Found' marks the debut LP for the London (by way of New Zealand) rock outfit led by 19-year-old singer/guitarist Finn Andrews. Their epic sound has drawn the band comparisons to many of the usual suspects (Coldplay, Radiohead, the Verve).

Filter

Enigmatically beautiful, yet stinging with bitter cold. [#10, p.90]

90

The Veils debut is a colossal - yet strangely intimate - record.

Q Magazine

What elevates The Veils above pleasant distraction... is [Andrews'] extraordinary, chameleon-like voice. [Mar 2004, p.113]

Amazon.com

An arrestingly epic and assured debut. [Amazon UK review]

Alternative Press

Where Starsailor failed at morphing Britpop with orchestral flair, the Veils soar. [Aug 2004, p.118]

80

The Guardian

Eyebrow-raising in print, they sound gripping here because of Andrews' glorious dagger-through-honey vocals, which combine with occasional strings and his band's raw passion to produce a corking debut.

Playlouder

'The Runaway Found' may have sounded great in 1996, but it also sounds great now, and by our reckoning it always will.

Uncut

Intoxicating. [Mar 2004, p.87]

71

Pitchfork

Despite its maturity, melodic strength, and direct connection to what came before, Runaway Found can't fully distance itself from the suspicion that it might just be "eh" in the long run.

Blender

There's a fine line between sounding passionate and overwrought, but [The Veils] find themselves on the proper side of that smudgy barrier--just. [Aug 2004, p.142]

No Ripcord

The Runaway Found is to be filed alongside Coldplay, Starsailor and Snow Patrol.

Falls between Starsailor, Travis, Elbow, Alfie, etc, always raising the question: who are The Veils?

Stylus Magazine

They’re a perfect opening band: professional and sufficiently appealing on a sonic level without risking upstaging the headliner with any distinct personality or emotional resonance.

Mojo

All pomp and bluster, like Coldplay at their most bombastic. [Mar 2004, p.108]

nt. TanvilaiPong gave it a9:
I love this album It sounds like nothing I've heard for many years.

Anthony S gave it a10:
In a music world where magazines will print the best ratings for the hottest acts, based solely on the fact that it will sell more copies, it feels astounding to know that The Veils will be the best kept secret for true music lover everywhere. With all of these references to Starsailor and Coldplay, I think an enigmatic band such as The Veils should be compared more to bands who have truly opend new ground for other acts. Take Afghan Wigs, The Philharmonic Orchestra and throw in a dash of The Velvet Underground...Ladies and Gentlemen...I give you The Veils.

Deirdre S gave it a10:
Every osng shines - one of the best albums of recent years

Tara gave it a9:

Colleen W gave it a9:
Love, love, love it.
