Summary

This "green album," produced by Ric Ocasek, is actually the second untitled album for the Los Angeles band, not to be confused with 1994's "blue album." The album is the band's first since leader Rivers Cuomo's graduation from Harvard -- in fact, it is their first since their 1996 sophomore effort, 'Pinkerton,' which alienated some fans with a shift toward an angrier sound.

91

Wall of Sound

Cuomo tones down his angst and replaces it with a sunny but dirty '70s rock core.

Nude As The News

An across-the-board triumph.

Entertainment Weekly

A return to their winning formula of sugary power pop and smart-assed rants. [18 May 2001, p.80]

CDNow

Yup, the angst and fury of 1997's Pinkerton is a thing of the past, as the band indulges in the kind of buzzing hooks and euphonic harmonies that made songs such as "Buddy Holly" and "Undone (The Sweater Song)" such huge hits.

Rolling Stone

They actually took the time to make a totally crunk geek-punk record, buzzing through ten excellent tunes in less than half an hour with zero filler and enough psychosexual contortions to buy Cuomo's shrink another hot tub.

Ink Blot Magazine

Weezer have faced their challenge with confident, easy-going nonchalance, offering one hell of a tight little record.

Q Magazine

The 11 [songs] selected for The Green Album hark back to the keenly observed power pop of Weezer's multi-platinum '94 debut, and there isn't a bad apple among them. [Aug 2001, p.142]

Dot Music

An album of two halves, 'Green' has its pop, counterbalanced with its noise-outs but above all, it's a very traditional, straightforward tunesome half hour which slots in effortlessly with its predecessors. A welcome return? Oh yes.

Sonicnet

A 28-minute, 10-song romantic pop album that includes two gems that handily best their early geek anthems "Buddy Holly" and "Undone (The Sweater Song)."

Splendid

It's blink-and-you’ll-miss-it running time and rather hefty price tag are the album’s only real drawbacks, proving that even after five years away, these kids can still write tunes that get stuck in your head for days.

The Onion (A.V. Club)

Feels a bit repetitive and perfunctory the first time through, but it's resolutely unpretentious and airtight throughout, without a wasted moment or false move.

What this album lacks in a standout track it makes up for in consistency.

New Musical Express (NME)

The 11 tracks trundle along in a generally inoffensive slipstream of occasionally admirable but mainly dull AOR silliness.

Benjamin T gave it an8:
it was a good album. it was a change from the blue album and pinkerton. but i like it. no song is bad on this album, and some songs are just pure awesome. one thing a didnt really like about the album is alot ( almost all) guitar solos were the product of duplicating the melody of the chorus. but overall, a good album

Jazza gave it a2:
Absolute garbage, the most agonising half hour of my life. (I actually thought it could get better)

mated gave it a10:
of course, you can't compare Weezers Green Album to their prior work. TGA is a beautiful Pop Album with fantastic melodies and a sing-a-long feeling.

Homie BB gave it a10:
this is weezers best album

[Anonymous] gave it an8:
10 swift pop tracks that fly by and stick with you. Short, but almost every second is great. The blue album is slightly better, though.

danny s gave it a10:
good

Jonas gave it a2:
Oh, this album makes me so sad. What have you done Weezer? What have you done Rivers? The songs are so shallow and lacking of depth, while in comparison to Pinkerton and Blue. But this..this..thing, I cannot begin to believe was made by the same artist. Why?! I am sad that Weezer will never be the same again. I give 2 for Island in the sun, Hash Pipe is okay too, but I also give points because I once loved Weezer. Now they are gone.
