Frank is a superb debut album that announces Amy Winehouse as a major young talent. With hardly any weak tracks on here, it's frightening to think what she could produce in the years to come.

Her first album--a UK smash in '03, now being issued here-- bristles with fiercer intelligence, though it lacks the classic soul-warmth of the Mark Ronson-produced Black. [16 Nov 2007, p.79]
The Onion (A.V. Club)
Frank inevitably feels like a warm-up for Black, but as rough drafts go, this one's a keeper.

Here, her vocals--less developed and wobblier than now, yet still astounding--and tell-it-like-it-is lyrics ('Fuck Me Pumps') take center stage.

Winehouse's record has the feeling of being allowed to grow on its own--without being meddled with and fussed over.

Frank is an honest, refreshingly personal record which, though very occasionally strays into easy jazz, has Gucci bags of personality.

There are contradictions--but it's hard not to hear the honesty and soul that resonates throughout this album.

What Frank winds up reinforcing is the fact that Winehouse’s success (unlike name-your-current-American-female-vocalist) is based on pure talent rather than good producers or gimmicks.

Frank was hailed as a star-making debut when it was issued in Britain four years ago. Heard today, its glossy admixture of breezy funk, dub and jazz-inflected soul makes a somewhat less dazzling impression.

Hearing 2003’s Frank the first time around, I can’t say I was knocked out by Amy Winehouse’s supper club jazz singing, and the album hasn’t improved with age.
None of her songs here are as indelible as 'Rehab' or as cutting as 'You Know I'm No Good'--and the best are co-written with Nas and Fugees collaborator Salaam Remi.

Aidan gave it a10:
This is a fantastic album, exposing the contemporary music industry for the fake that it is. Ms. Winehouse is one of the few true artists in the world today, complete with human frailty and beauty. Ms. Winehouse's jazz-advent album proves that with enough talent and creativity, music can be fun again. For those stuck on her battle with drug addiction, take a look at some of your favorite artists, starting with classical. . .
C K gave it a3:
Amy has a nice voice, but her songs don't do anything for me. I can't recommend this album to anyone.
John gave it a1:
She really has an awful voice. The only reason to listen to this kind of crap is when you want to be a whiny poseur who "thinks drugs are the worst thing in the world". Sorry to say, but the only reason to listen to this is because she is a really sad person.
Doris N. gave it a9:
This record is incredible. I actually prefer it to Back To Black whose heavy handed borrowing from the Motown sound feels overly contrived comparatively... What sets Amy apart from Sharon Jones or her other peers is that she is an amazing songwriter who avoids all the cliches - she is also an original who will stand out in any crowd. I strongly question the intentions of anyone who claims not to like this album - my guess is that they are a sad breed of sociopaths who like to put on their white hoods and vomit their negativity online... Give us all a break.
D R. gave it a10:
Back when Ms Winehouse wasn't crazy she was still just as capable of making a colossal (debut) record. Tracks like F Me Pumps, In My Bed and Stronger Than Me are sharp, chirpy and satirical which make for a very warm and fuzzy feeling at the end of it!
Mark gave it a4:
Tessa needs to realise how pop stars, their egos, and their media profiles function. It's Winehouse's tabloid coverage that enables her to maintain her popularity. In that sense her drug 'problem' is the very thing she's clinging to. I also don't like the idea that it's a 'problem' when Winehouse has more support and resources available to her than most drug addicts. She chooses to do drink and drugs. I don't sympathise with her at all, because I have more than two brain cells. And this album is utterly mediocre. Not 'bad', just uninspiring and derivative. Like 99% of modern music.
Sami P gave it a9:
An astounding entrance to the music industry, Amy's "Frank" demonstrates that vocal prowess and meaningful lyrics still have radio credibility, or at least commercial viability. While not as jazzy and nostalgic as her successor, there is no denying that Winehouse can make the ordinary extraordinary and with candor and tongue-in-cheek magnificence. Bravo Amy!
