    [A] finely honed collection. [29 Jun 2007, p.136]
  2. There's a real person writing and singing these songs, with a lifetime's worth of joys and disappointments, as well as the wisdom to keep it all in proper balance.
  3. It takes time to make music as effortless and elegant as this, to construct songs this finely detailed.
  4. The album traverses Ray Charles-like country soul, smoky late-night jazz, lush Western swing, and even a bit of Rockpile-style rockabilly.

[It] sidles forth with an easy-going aura, belying the artistry within. [Jul 2007, p.107]
  6. [Lowe] keeps it terrifically mellow without getting mushy in the head.
  7. 46
The lyrical chops are intact but the production is far too dated.

Albums this sublime don't come around very often. Lowe plainly has put his 58 years of humanity into this album, although most of the Albums this sublime don't come around very often. Lowe plainly has put his 58 years of humanity into this album, although most of the songs on this album are clearly not autobiographical. For this we should be thankful, instead of an introspective confessional album that many artists at his age fall prey to, we get to enjoy a great storyteller who is also a great singer/songwriter. Near perfect! Expand

Well the new nick lowe sounds exactly like the last three albums he's released. He sounds old, so the album of the title is appropriate. Well the new nick lowe sounds exactly like the last three albums he's released. He sounds old, so the album of the title is appropriate. An overrated album, i'm a big fan of old school nick lowe and rockpile but this album is nothing like the nick lowe we all love and adore. The main problem is that at the time of jesus of cool and his albums released early in his career is the production. The production on those old albums were modern sounding for the time, this albums sounds as if it was recorded back in the 70's and offers nothing new to a modern listener. His songwriting is also over cynical and not as enjoyable as his old stuff. His lyrics are playful but the lyrics don't match the somber tone and "mature" sound the record. Expand
