Wisely, the quartet avoid the well-trodden road of "epic" guitar rock to deliver textures loaded with lyrical guitar phrasings within over-modulated grit and distortion.

While the band was hardly in a rut before, it nonetheless sounds revitalized here, reveling in big melodies and even bigger riffs.

Ataraxia/Taraxis reinstates Pelican at the top of the instrumental food chain and, if they continue like this, they show no sign of coming down.

Each song on Ataraxia/Taraxis is diverse, with moments of melodious prog-rock, powerful riffs and hazy ambience; however, there's also cohesion to the EP that makes it feel expansive and utterly epic.

As a whole, Ataraxia/Taraxis is both an excellent EP and an optimistic glance into the music that Pelican is likely to put out on their next release.... It's concise, never boring, and it demands multiple listens.

This brief addition to their canon might consist of just four songs, but it's a potent reminder of why we love them.

Four-song EP only seemingly starts with a very simple and minimalist arrangement of "Ataraxia" only to hit with the rock energy of "LatheFour-song EP only seemingly starts with a very simple and minimalist arrangement of "Ataraxia" only to hit with the rock energy of "Lathe Biosas", which is kind of a combination of instrumental indie rock and metal - likewise, following "Parasite Colony", while ending "Taraxis" is the fusion of styles presented in previous tracks. EP successful for the band. Full Review »
