Literally the perfect example of 'one room several atmospheres'. During this one-hour long project you are tossed in every directions of Madlib's crazy and eclectic mind. If many songs (not to say all of them) sound like unfinished maquettes, there clearly is a certain pleasure as you discover the varied skills of Madlib. The more you will listen to 'Beat Konducta, Vol. 1-2: Movie Scenes', the more you will detect its details, phases (some way more interesting and deep than others yet), great samples and marvelous flow. Stellar production, infectious beat switches and incredible structures. It's all about it. This is undoubtedly another major step in the terrific producter's career. Madlib clearly demonstrated that he didn't always need to be surrounded by talented rappers and MCs to craft brilliant tracks and drafts. With only a few beats, he manages to teleport us to different places with indistinct feelings and emotions, while the tracklist plays with near perfect movements. Obviously, it's not for everyone, but I think that any hip-hop fan will find gems that will evoke in him emotions as strong as the ones I was given to feel. Expand

Don't get me wrong, it is very good. Problem for me is that almost evey song is less than 2 mins and most have spoken word at the start for about 30 to 40 seconds. This means we get only about 1 min of actual music per track. Those 1 mins of music are amazing, but I would have preferred longer tracks. Each time I get into a track, it ends. Madlib is amazing talent. No doubt about it. I love that he sampled Van Dyke Parks...it was like a personal shout-out to me. Expand

  1. A very detailed, though still utterly bewildering, glimpse into the producer's musical thought process.
  2. Falling somewhere between a compilation, a beat CD and a producer showcase, this fails to satisfy on any of those levels.

This wild pastiche demonstrates why Madlib is one of the most talented heads in hip-hop. [Apr/May 2006, p.103]
