  1. This is inspired stuff from a rebel who still has plenty to offer.
  2. Represents a new peak in a career full of them.
  3. His most inspired effort in years.
  4. The slight excursions into new genres don't go very far, and they make some of the straighter music sound rote by comparison, but about the worst that can be said about Blame The Vain is that songs like the jangly country anthem "When I First Came Here" are professional-grade.
  5. Despite all the artistic and personal upheaval surrounding it, Blame the Vain doesn't suffer from some kind of transitional crisis -- it's pure, classic Yoakam, and another fine addition to his impressive 20-year catalog.

Works on the age-old theory that if it ain't broke, don't fix it--and it is all the better for it. [Jul 2005, p.120]

Not that much has changed sound-wise. [Jul 2005, p.114]

one of the strongest country albums of the last few years... the bakersfield sound is there, ditto the retro sound of chris isaak... the one of the strongest country albums of the last few years... the bakersfield sound is there, ditto the retro sound of chris isaak... the presentation of how his `woman done left him` almost sounds like he's trying to make one last communication with his fallen comrade warren zevon... highly recommended! His well-documented blend of 3-5 different musical styles continues Dwight proves that one can exist and thrive outside of the "mainstream." His well-documented blend of 3-5 different musical styles continues to work because, simply, very few other artists do it. The man's lyrics are rarely discussed, his formulations are evocative and intelligent. Plus, he rocks. Watch out though, because you'll be grooving and then suddenly some massive steel guitar will be wailing. Expand
