Blazing Gentlemen (and many of Pollard’s other releases) are less an album than a suite.

That’s the case overall for Blazing Gentlemen, which too often comes off like a rote exercise instead of an inspired undertaking.

Gentlemen's about as interesting as middling Pollard records get, but it's middling all the same, a fittingly abnormal end to a most unusual year.

It's just that he has done all this better before. [Jan 2014, p.124]

There are some enjoyable tunes on here that might appeal to the curious who lost track of Pollard and GBV over the years. But the numerous less riveting, just-a-bit-too derivative, run of the mill rock songs will leave even newcomers with the feeling that they've heard it all before.

A strong solo release from a man who's been on quite a roll since 2010 or so. This doesn't quite reach the heights of Honey Locust Honky Tonk, but continues in the same vein, with more fleshed-out rock songs, and less prog and power-pop, which seems to be the domain of GBV nowadays. 7/10 may not sound great, but five or six 7/10 albums a year from one man (in large part) with a really cool sound is a music fan's dream come true.
