Blue Film is an often unforgettable introduction.
  2. Feb 26, 2014
His intimate voice strikes enough of a balance with the chilly electronics to keep the core of this winter release at room temperature.
  3. Mar 12, 2014
A string of songs offering glitchy low-beat techno, classical and ambient styles, Blue Film offers a great deal to those expecting something different in their musical diet.
  4. 70
Beautiful in places, but falling flat on an emotional level elsewhere, there is an air of duality in Lo-Fang’s work as light and dark elements intertwine and clash with each other. For someone who has done so much travelling, it is clear that Lo-Fang is still finding his feet.
  5. 60
For all Hemerlein’s prodigious talents, you can only have your heartstrings tugged for so long before it all gets a bit wearing.
  6. Feb 24, 2014
On casual listen it’s a perfectly pleasant electro-classical record. But despite the considerable technical talents of its creator, it could be by just about anyone.
  7. Feb 20, 2014
Ultimately, Blue Film is a decent, enjoyable album that hints at Hemerlein’s undoubted talent whilst never pulling up too many trees.
  8. Feb 20, 2014
Lyrically, Lo-Fang songs range from almost embarrassingly inert to annoyingly overwrought to frustratingly tone deaf.
  9. Feb 24, 2014
The production is competent, yet very derivative for 2014, appearing stuck between ornately symphonic leftfield pop and Timberlake-brand R&B.
  10. Apr 16, 2014
Lo-Fang tries to do too much on his debut album, Blue Film.
  11. Feb 20, 2014
With a few forgettable songs and seemingly overcrowded moments, Lo-Fang's debut falls short--acting as more of a promise of what's to come, rather than a thrilling introduction.

Though the critics seem to be critiquing certain elements of this album, to me, it was unique, elegant and very well polished. I think as far as a debut goes, Lo-Fang does a great job in producing a different sound than most artists and he even plays over 7 instruments throughout the album himself. Very well done album with a few flaws but nonetheless a great debut. Full Review »

Lo-Fang's debut album is utterly fantastic; a uniquely produced and catchy album filled with beautiful strings and sounds. With fantastic vocals by Matthew Hemerlein and a brilliant production, Lo-Fang's Blue Film is sonically brilliant. The only flaws of the album is that some of the lyrics aren't very good, which is a shame because the album, as stated prior, is fantastic and well worth a listen. Full Review »
