  • Summary: After touring with the Pixies, Black Francis (aka Frank Black) returns to solo work on his latest album.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 15 out of 19
  2. Negative: 0 out of 19
  1. It's far and away the finest record Frank Black has produced in a long time, and shows that it's time for the old pretenders to show the new pretenders a thing or two about writing a rock song.

Like much of Francis' most compelling work, the album is a mediation on a muse. [Fall 2007, p.96]
  3. Add an ability to string lyrical and musical narratives together to create a complete whole and Bluefinger should serve as yet another highlight in an already stellar body of work.
  4. Bluefinger is, then, a simple, accessible and enjoyable album of rock and blues by a formidable artist rediscovering his scream while maintaining his cultured songwriting abilities.
  5. On Bluefinger, it sounds like the Pixies' fantastic reunion shows have allowed Black to finally shed his ambivalence about rocking out. So he does.
  6. Bluefinger is the best overall solo record Black has released in a long time, but it's still only good, not great.
  7. 60
Charles Thompson has fittingly made an album that sounds more like the Pixies than any of his previous solo efforts. [Oct 2007, p.96]

Charles sound loose and revitalized on Bluefinger. I love the rough and ready feel of the music. The man is unbelievably prolific. The depth and breadth of the music he has produced over the years is stunning. This latest is another gem to behold. Expand

Awesome record! this is the album the pixies should have made before they split the 1st time.

Yet another solid effort from Black Francis (Frank Black) whatever he decides to call himself this album lol. Threshold Apprehension, Lolita, and She took all the money are worth the purchase and that is just the start. Not one of the greatest records but pretty darn good! Expand

Let's not kid ourselves: it's not an instant classic. But it is darn good. Frank Black's career had really stalled, and this may be the album that marks his return to top form. Collapse
