I was waiting for something new and different from John but this is just like the rest of his lukewarm albums. Nothing special and nothing to offer lyrically. Its not all bad its just nothing special.

Viewed objectively; Born and Raised is a departure from John Mayers usual genre of music. The whole album has a theme of being a lot more "laid back", which is noticed when Mayer doesnt use much of the vocal scale and keeps a relaxed tone. It is also noticed in his choice of intrument, where Mayer chooses to depart from his blues inspired electric guitar and use a more acoustic style.Viewed objectively; Born and Raised is a departure from John Mayers usual genre of music. Subjectively; If you really loved John Mayer´s style before he made Born and Raised, the song that embodies that the most on this album would be the song "Something like Olivia" or "If i ever get around to living". However both are also in a more "relaxed" tone. I personaly don´t like the genre Mayer is flirting with which is why im rating it a 6. It is in any case a great production and stellar music - however it does not fall in my taste. If you like a genre clash of blues and country you might just like this.

The Don Was-produced album proceeds at an unhurried pace, featuring Jackson Browne-like confessionals and Young-style, harmonica-accented shuffles. [Jul 2012, p.77]

Born and Raised a prime example of the John Mayer paradox--it's good enough to satisfy even his most casual fans, but the old-school Mayerisms that remain will only anger his detractors.

It's an honest, and oftentimes compelling, statement on his road to redemption.
