Born Free goes a long, long way toward keeping that heartland flame burning bright: it's familiar yet fresh, and song for song it's the best album Kid Rock has cut since Devil Without a Cause.

As he moves beyond his rap boundaries into more country-rock fare, this album is a step forward for the Kid.

It would be churlish to deny that some of the selections on Born Free feature tunes on which the listener can truly chew, but it would also be wrong to ignore the fact that without this music Kid Rock's lyrics are, at best, the work of a sentimentalist and at worst, the mewlings of a moron. 1. It is easy to see that Kid Rocks best years are behind him. The all American “badass” who dominated both the rap and rock empires has now matured in to an entirely different artist. Kid Rock best known for combining the best of rap and the best of rock together in to an interesting genre that has attracted many. Kid Rock has created many different hits such as American Badass, Cowboy, Amen, and **** is now attempting to dominate a different music scene, Country music. This genre being very different than anything Kid Rock has made before not only comes with a new audience but also a new style and persona that he must live up to. Leaning away from rap and rock means that his music comes with a message of family, values, and tradition. With a very patriotic platform this album could easily fit in with 70’s music such as Skynyrd and the Eagles. This album which is produced by Rick Ruben who helped create Ball Breakers by ACDC gives the album a specific style which is what gives it that 70’s touch. As I scrolled through the different tracks on this album I slowly realized that these songs are very general unlike Kid Rocks old stuff which was certainly specified for a specific audience. I realized that these songs could be enjoyed by just about any group of people assuming of course that they understand the message that Kid Rock is trying to portray. Growing up listening to guitarists such as Jimmy Hendrix, Slash, and Jimmy Page it was hard to relate to this new type of music so naturally my review of this music is going to be a bit bias. However I have to say that if an all American family is in desperate need of some good tunes that won’t corrupt their younglings while at the same time providing catchy tunes for all to enjoy then Kid Rocks new album Born Free is just the thing for you. 2. “Born Free” Kid Rock Steven Feld LAS II 2-16-10 Mr. Brennan Kid Rocks album “Born Free” was his first album released in 3 years. It was a shocking change for his fans in my opinion because he completely changed his style of music. Rock is usually known to be the American badass rocker, but in this album changes his style to more a country, Tim Mcgraw type of genre. In my opinion I am starting to get tired of him, this is now his 7th album and Kid is starting to get old. But an interesting thing I noticed was that this is his first album without a parental advisory sticker; is this a sign he is settling down? I think so. He is losing his style and with that losing his fans very quickly. For any kid rock fan I would definitely not recommend this album, but I would recommend this album to any country fan that has never listened to Rock because the actual music is very good. Expand
