This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Lana Del Rey releases Born to Die amidst controversy that is all to familiar with her career. Her music has been overshadowed by her hype, which is unfortunate. Lana Del Rey presents a sexuality and femininity that is elegant yet desperate for her phantom lover. A united piece of art, the cohesion throughout Born To Die might prove too dreary to ears drenched in the music that makes up the majority of the Billboard charts.

Truly a beautiful album, Lana is the co-writer for all tracks on the Born To Die LP. Her alto-coloratura showcases a lyric range throughout the album modulating from rough and gravelly in 'Carmen' to a soaring operatic climax in 'Off To The Races'. The sound of the album is a hybrid of various genres resulting in a trip-hop, Hollywood sad-soul cascade that washes over the listener. The title-track opens the album, introducing us all to the tragic universe of love and death that is Born To Die. Poignant and honest lyricism present a timeless stillness that is the persevering mood throughout the album, as lush string orchestration and fat beats catapult the album forward. The mid-tempo songs and sections are a treat since they are such rare occasions on this album. This CD is best served with glasses of red wine and slow dancing in the pale moonlight. Hopefully you have a dance partner since this album will leave you pining for one.

If you have been following Lana's career or a new fan, all 15 tracks on the deluxe edition of Born to Die are worthy of falling in love with. In 'Off To The Races', Lana sings appreciatively of her lover who is chasing after her while she raises hell across the city. On 'National Anthem', Lana declares herself the talk of the nation while being introduced with fireworks in the beginning of the track and backed by an all-boys' choir in the chorus. Lana provides the audience two character sketches in her album: 'Carmen', who is a burnt-out party girl and 'Lolita', a heartbreaking nymph. 'Video Games' is the definite highlight of the album in its ethereal strings and celestial production. Lana refers to herself singing at the bottom of the ocean In 'Dark Paradise', which might explain why we are all all spell-bound with her siren-song.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I love Lana's voice. The first song of her's I listened was young and beautiful. So naturally I took some time before listening to her past albums. Born to die has many little pockets of hidden vocal genius-ness. When I looked up the album online most of the appreciation was towards title track and video games. But what got my attention was off to the races and Lolita. She uses two different voices there - a bold, deep voice when she sings to the listener and a high pitched squeaky voice when she sings to her old man. The interesting fact is that research shows older men (let's say 35-45) like the squeaky voice more in a woman because that indicates the youthfulness of a female. As in they prefer young girls. It's so intelligent if Lana to modulate her voice to signify the difference. Lolita, the song itself is inspired from the book Lolita in which an older man is in love with a 14 year old girl. This hidden gem -her voice modulation- sadly is so easily overlooked. This is an added bonus to the lyrical masterpieces she's produced. The production of the songs did not remove her vulnerability and emotions. Expand

This album is an ambiance all on its own. Lana Del Rey burst onto the scene with this strong debut album, full of biting and provocative lyrics and a delicate mix of alternative and baroque pop. While many over the years have criticized Del Rey's somber vocals, you can't have these kinds of instrumentals and lyrics with a typical "pop princess" voice. She is singing from the heart, with references to Americana and fame culture - something that she obviously fears but also anticipates with a sort of vengeful excitement. The drums and orchestral arrangements combine to make catchy slow-burners that create a sultry atmosphere: perfect for the excellent songwriting on display.

Born to Die, perhaps lost to the times of now, will be a breakthrough album because it created the foundations for Lana Del Rey. Without this initial reflection on her life, Lana would never have been able to go on to create her most influential songs, notably Ultraviolence, Ride, Cinnamon Girl and much more.

I was supposed to listen to a very dull and boring album. How wrong I was. "Born To Die" is an incredible indie pop album with its own special atmosphere and order. Every song deserves attention, but not every one of them is perfect and new to the world. Despite this,an excellent album.

I love this album. It's a huge one for Lana as she solidified her status and skyrocketed to fame. It's wonderful, practically poetry. The beautiful melancholy marketed the album to many and made her a household name. The album is dreamy, yet heavy. I love this album it certainly deserves better reviews.

One of her best works, besides, it's a solid debut album to an artist of the 2010s which influenced most of the pop and indie pop we see today. Honestly, one of the greatest albums of all time.

Phooey with all of the critics and naysayers who are tearing this album to shreds. Born to die is an extremely satisfying pop record and that is a rare thing indeed this days. I couldn't care less about Del Rey's image and whether or not it's genuine or manufactured or the story of her ascent to pop stardom. The music is the read deal. For now, that's what matters.

The only thing exhausting about this album are the litany of conflicting so-called "critic" reviews it has inspired, which are really attacks on her image. This is a well-crafted, beautiful album by a girl that simply wants to write and sing. Has the music world become so snotty, so affected, that music can no longer be accepted at face value?

From the first track to the last, del Rey's haunting theme of love gone wrong and damsel in distress bleeds into each song, albeit in the same melodic pattern, but beautiful nonetheless. Songs "This is What Make Us Girls," "Born to Die," and " Radio" make up a powerhouse trio from the LP that boasts the strongest of her personality and vulnerability. Great freshman album.

This is probably one of the first pop albums that I like. Don't listen to the "professional critics", cause those can be divided into three categories:
    - Those who for some reason thought she was indie (even though she never claimed to be), and then received a pop album. So they gave it negative reviews (pitchfork, stereogum).
    - Those who knew she was pop but thought she was inauthentic

    - Those who knew she was pop but thought she was inauthentic (what the hell does that mean anyway) and listened to it with their mind already made up.
    - Those who listened to it, remaining impartial at first.

Now, my personal review: the first six songs are all great, without any exception. After that, the album gets a bit same-ish, but the tracks are all still good. "Video games" still remains one of the best pop songs of the last years.

Anyone who thinks this girl is untalented, should really listen to this album. She has a phenomenal voice. The lyrics are a bit "eh", but compared to artists like Rihanna/Kesha/whatever she deserves the nobel prize for them.

Pitchfork described born to die as follows: "so romantic it makes you long for reality". I beg to differ. It's reality that makes you want to join LDR's fantasy world. This album won't be everyone's cup of tea, due to the style of music, but it IS certain she has a great voice. I wouldn't call it a master piece, but it is a very promising debut. 8/10

Not only that but she really needs to gain some confidence and stage presence. Probably her biggest pitfall is incorporating Gaga-esque cliches about money, fame, and beauty into some of her songs. She needs to be a little closer to her audience and not so aloof. It's also a weary listen. I can't listen to it the whole way through (though this effect isn't as bad as on Adele's album). Expand

Born to Die is a pretty good debut album, even though it gets slightly boring at times. Lana's vocals are kind of limited, so consequentially, the album isn't exactly varied. When an album is capable of divide the critics the way "Born to Die" does, it is because something interesting about it. Perhaps, I see it as something very creative and different, she's not faking her voice, can't she sing different? And so if the whole album is similar is not because a lack of creativeness, it could be as the way to express the whole theme in the album. Don't you think?
