The Donkeys' debut album was impressive enough, but there;s even more to admire in this fine follow-up. [Jul 2011, p.80]

The album as a whole, however, is more than reasonably enjoyable. While still by its nature loosely strung and carefree, Born with Stripes demands your attention in a way that Living on the Other Side never did.

The moments that do shine are thoroughly warm; warm in a natural, pretention-dropping way, which seems to be where they're aiming. If The Donkeys can recreate that feeling a few more times they might be wonderful. For now they're merely salvageable.

  1. A great follow-up for the Donkey's. Songs shuffle along and sing with hooks. It is nice to see a band making music that sounds fresh despite the fact that the influences are worn right on the sleeve. It seems like the band wrote in a more rock style for this album. The last album (Living on the Other Side) was a bit more laid back but this one isn't afraid to rock out a little bit. Truth is that I'm never sure what these songs lyrics are about but that doesn't really matter because the catchy hum-able style is prefect. Expand
