In just 10 tidy songs, it brings us closer than ever before to that distant dreamer.

It's a concept album about the loneliness of pop life--with a high-profile broken engagement behind her, Brit gets personal and drops her most bummed-out music ever.

This album continues the striptease of Britney’s career. But behind each discarded veil there is just another veil, an insubstantial gauze masking teams of (presumably unphotogenic) producers, writers, stylists and sloganeers.

Despite the absence of longtime producer Max Martin and his associates, the album is a surprisingly retrograde affair, with midtempo tracks marred by dated production and vocals that hark back to the days when Brit was selling 10 million.

Nothing on the record comes across as natural, and it’s not until the album’s iTunes bonus tracks--“Brightest Morning Star” and “Now That I Found You” in particular--that Spears sounds like she’s singing for herself. But, on the album proper, neither the pop figurehead nor the real woman behind it can be found.

Ms. Spears and Will.i.am have turned to European disc jockeys who have found dance music’s lowest, least funky common denominator: the steady thump of four-on-the-floor. And they’ve settled for too many tepid tracks.

Nowhere does Britney Jean sound like Britney Spears.

Britney Spears has yet again delivered a solid album with meaningful lyrics in many songs such as Passenger, Alien, Now That I Found You. This really is a shame as there still is much to be discussed within its short thirty minute length. A personal album - definitely not. A fun dance record with some emotional moments - yes. Its low points, unfortunately, hit early on, with the lackluster Alien, Perfume, and Tik Tik Boom. The rest of the album, however, is pretty solid. Body Ache, Till Its Gone, and Passenger all deserve a place in the Britney Spears discography. It is a shame an album full of potential hits was wasted, but its seems this records fate will be as a fan favorite. Expand

Unfortunately, 'Britney Jean' fails where her other records have flourished. It is incredibly flawed, none of the tracks seem to piece together and though songs like 'Alien' and 'Work ****' are admittedly strong tracks alone, in the mish-mash production that runs throughout this record, they are lost gems. Other songs that stand out amongst the wreckage are 'Til It's Gone' and 'Passenger', these nod slightly towards the album fans and critics alike would certainly hope to hear from the pop icon; however as a whole the record just doesn't seem to work. There is no defending the low points of this album that come in the form of robotic, badly written hook-ups with will.i.am or the cringeworthy "duet" with Spears' sister Jamie Lynn. It does say a lot that a Britney album is still quite an exciting thing in this decade, however there is not much to get hyped about with this one. Expand
