  1. These are thick songs built around left-field ideas, positively fat with melodic contentâ??physically shake the record, and sheets of notes would probably spray out like a colorful rain of tonal Skittles.
  2. Minor grumbles aside, Bromst is a thrilling, hyperactive album that runs from calm and composed to frantic and frazzled, usually within the space of an intro.
  3. 80
Right from the get-go, whatever "community" Deacon was aiming for seems to be established--the music is inclusive, it's warm, and it invites you in rather than thrusting itself at you, unlike previous Deacon works.
  4. 80
Even at his most contemplative and nuanced, Deacon remains a DIY trickster at heart.
  5. Blender
    70
He's a master of sweaty hyperventilation, but it's his less frenzied moments--the techno equivalent of circular breathing--that keep the party from collapse. [Apr 2009, p.59]
  6. Mojo
    60
Cheeky, but delightful. [Apr 2009, p.106]
  7. Deacon is a gifted musician capable of so much more, and that makes Bromst feel like a waste.

Astounding. Euphoric. Bacchanalian. Bonkers, of course, but also very intelligent and erudite. It's a rare album (especially one so Astounding. Euphoric. Bacchanalian. Bonkers, of course, but also very intelligent and erudite. It's a rare album (especially one so long) that feels so cohesive; it never drags and every track ( with the possible exception of the comparatively brief palate cleanser Wet Wings) feels like an essential piece of a beautifully conceived whole. Brilliant is an understatement. "Bromst" is the new watermark for electronic music. More shoegazy than M83, more energetic than Animal Brilliant is an understatement. "Bromst" is the new watermark for electronic music. More shoegazy than M83, more energetic than Animal Collective. Dan Deacon charted his own path, and set it on fire. Album of the year. Expand

Miles and miles better than his last. Lush and triumphant, like some post-apocalyptic mountain-people dance party.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The best album of 2009. Bromst sounds like an Animal Collective album, played by a drunken dj, while he was listening to a Vampire Rodents album..... Expand

Dan is moving away from his simplicity into the avante garde, but still remaining open, accessible and enthralling. I just hope we can find Dan is moving away from his simplicity into the avante garde, but still remaining open, accessible and enthralling. I just hope we can find some live chant-alongs (or equivalent) in this Bromst, because the collective feel was always the key to Deacon's magic. Expand
