  • Summary: Another somewhat strange indie-pop band from Oklahoma (Flaming Lips, anyone?), the Starlight Mints return with 11 catchy new tunes on this sophomore release.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 7 out of 9
  2. Negative: 0 out of 9
  1. Spin
    100
Mix[es] xylophones, spaghetti-Western trumpets, and quirky trick guitars to sweeping effect. [Jun 2003, p.109]
  2. Built On Squares is a refreshing slice of musical Valhalla.
  3. Alternative Press
    80
Packs more moods and minx-like mischief than many albums twice its length. [Jul 2003, p.114]
  4. Built on Squares is the fun and catchy work of talented pop musicians, writing terribly interesting songs without compromising pop's essential, visceral lure.
  5. In the end, the disc is less odd than it is charming with more than enough twists and turns to keep it interesting.
  6. Under The Radar
    70
A richer, more layered sounding album than their debut. [#5, p.115]
  7. Magnet
    60
The problem is that the half-hour Squares is as unfocused and repetitive as a double album. [#59, p.108]

Incredible album. I don't know how it could be rated so low by All Music Guide. I love it.
