It might be as modern as loincloth, but ‘California X’ is surely a future classic.
  2. It’s one of the young year’s best all-out rock records, the kind of fantastic full-length that some kid in a garage will one day look back to themselves, maybe when plugging that guitar in for the first time.

The electric camaraderie, chrome riffs, and crisp production make for a record that not only kicks, but shows how fun it can be to make music with your friends.

Outstanding comparisons aside, California X are certainly capable of standing on their own.

It's far from perfect, but it's never less than driven, and that drive gets you past the garbled syllables and any pesky feelings of deja vu.

Much as it is a thrash-and-burn album, the self-titled release also hints at subtly sensitive undertones.
  7. Dec 17, 2013
It’s its own thing, and a pretty good one.
