As an album Candela has everything: it's energetic and adventurous but these adjectives are synonymous with Mice Parade’s constant journeying through music.

Though Candela never fully eludes to Pierce's studied background, the foundations are strong enough for him to go wild with the decorations. [May 2013, p.106]

Pierce's lyrics remain largely opaque, and the atypically lumpen Warm Hand In Narnia sounds unsettlingly like Snow Patrol, but to cavil feels churlish when elsewhere such vivacious invention pervades. [May 2013, p.86]

Afropop sparkle to jazzy bounce and shoe gaze shimmer, but too often these exotic ingredients feel like undigested dilettante dabblings. [May 2013, p.74]

The New York collective continues to produce intelligent music with its seventh album. [Mar-Apr 2013, p.103]
  6. Candela makes for an, at times unpleasant, but ultimately forgettable listen.

Despite its flaws, it can at times be an unexpected and stunning trip.

Although Mice Parade is typically regarded as a solo project of Pierce, it is clear the concept of community compels him. And this is where his biggest strength lies.

Candela is loaded with the kind of bracing, unpredictable pop music that a listener can find something new in again and again.
  10. As much as Mice Parade’s previous releases seemed to be insular statements, Candela is simply stretched too thin, with too little of Pierce himself in the music.

Candela has some shining moments but, overall, is an album that teases the palette instead of really satisfying.

More often than not, however, Mice Parade pushes these songs down paths that don't fit.

Candela doesn't represent Mice Parade's most memorable outing, but it does showcase a willingness to expand the expectations surrounding their sound.

Though things work best when Pierce allows enough space amidst the music for the actual songs to flourish, even the jostling of the overcrowded bits is wonderful and energetic.

Candela works well as an entry point into Pierce's earlier music as well as a summation of how artfully he blends electronic, indie, and global influences.

The breezy, rhythmically complex melting-pot approach still plays a pretty big role on Candela, Mice Parade's eighth album, but more than ever, Pierce seems to have a vested interest in letting some graceful whooshes of shoegazer noise take over where necessary.
