This is indie rock where the big hooks and bold arrangements never get in the way of the complex emotions at the heart of these nine songs, and that's why five years isn't too long to wait for music this special.

At nine tracks in 33 minutes, Candidate Waltz hardly overstays its welcome, and it's hard to fault Johnson for keeping it punchy and direct.

It may not have the knockout highs that Dual Hawks or Flashes and Cables had, but it is just as consistent all the way through.

By any math, though, Candidate Waltz is a solid entry point, showcasing the band's mid-tempo stomps (reliably 4/4, despite the title) and Johnson's Zevon-cribbing rasp and wit.

Johnson approached these nine songs from a position of discomfort, writing in isolation on his least familiar instrument, bass. Candidate Waltz therefore doesn't rip, but rather pulses.

At its best, it's a net that holds you comfortably, but at times it's easy to get lost in the imprecision. The lyrics could use some claws (which, to be fair, few nets have).
